First off I guess I should say we aren't sure if this baby is a boy or a girl yet! We won't know until s/he makes an appearance in November.

For a girl, we're down to Ava Elisabeth or Autumn Sage. Our last name is Dover, so we really have to be careful about which names do/don't go with it! I think both of these names go with our last name. If you don't think so, please tell me! : I won't be offended, I promise!

Pros for Ava Elizabeth:
We LOVE it. Ds would have been Ava if he had been a girl.
My grandmother is Avanel Elizabeth (A-vuh-nell, accent on the A) so this would be a variation on her name
Possible nickname of Daisy, which I think is cute

Cons for Ava Elizabeth:
It is SO popular right now and moving up the list.
In our state, it was #5 last year and has been consistently moving up the list.

Pros for Autumn Sage:
It's pretty and a little crunchy (like us! ) without being too "out there"

Cons:
It's just a name I came up with. It doesn't connect the baby to anyone necessarily in her past.

So whaddya think?! Please be honest! my feeling won't be hurt. Or if you have a great name that would go well with our last name, I'd love to hear it!

I really love Ava Elizabeth Dover. It sounds perfect.

Although, it IS a drawback if Ava becomes a trendy name. That's something I always think about first. What about a variation on it like Eva or Ada? Hmmm..

I also like Autumn Sage too but I'd be wary of giving two nature-type names in a row. For instance, I like "Skye" for a girl but when I try to put something cute and "crunchy" after it, it doesn't sound right, it sounds like an adjective describing "Skye" i.e. "Scarlett" or "Summer"...

But maybe that's just me...

I know this probably didn't help...

I voted other (well, I voted "I don't like either, but that's not true! I like both )- what about Autumn Elisabeth? You get the nature name, the connection to your grandmother, and no too-popular name! Also, I'm not sure about the two "v" sounds in Ava Dover. I like Ava Elizabeth Dover, but people don't often use middle names in just regular things, kwim?

They are all great names though!!!

I second Autumn Elizabeth. :-)

i think the popularity of ava right now is a big con.

I voted for Ava, but also wonder about the two V's. Autumn is also gaining in popularity and will be right along with Ava soon! :

Autumn Sage for me.....I LOVE Sage, Autumn is cool but gaining popularity but its a good name. I like Sage as a first name.

Yeah, DH joked a few times about Winter Oregano, but I think he's over that now...

I love Skye too but have the same trouble with it. And the problem with Dover is that it can make a lot of names sound like a verb. (like Eileen Dover, for example!) or a command (like Ben Dover!)

Why didn't I think of Autumn Elisabeth?! I like that. Thanks

Eileen Dover or Ben Dover, oh dear!

The only name among the three that I'm not wild about is Sage... I love both Ava and Elizabeth, and Autumn is also pretty. The point about the nature names in a row is a good one.

My husband's last name is Miner and we are having to consider that when coming up with names -- it pretty much deep-sixes anything ending in -er (Taylor, Tyler, etc.). For about a nanosecond I thought, "Cole! What a great name!" and then thought through the ramifications of that...

I hear ya on the -er endings!

Cole Miner .... bwahahahahaaahaha

I fancied the name Summer for a moment but her name would be Summer Weeks and that seemed a little too close to treacherous territory.

Autumn Elisabeth is really cute!
i love avanel, have you though of using that? ava is really popular, but avanel is not.
I voted Ava Elizabeth just because it sounds so classic and flows so nicely. It's a beautiful name. Also, I might be kind of biased (I knew a girl named Autumn and she was just awful).
Ava is way too popular just now! You don't want her being called by her surname in preschool if there are nine other Ava's do you?

Please keep voting, ladies! : The names are running neck and neck...

I really liked both names, but I voted for Ava Elizabeth. When I said the names to myself, it just sounded beautiful! And I think the history behind it is nice... Worth being popular because it is personal!

I voted Ava Elisabeth....but I would suggest actually using your grandmother's name, Avanel.

Avanel Elisabeth. That way you can call her "Ava" if you want but she can use her full name if it is too popular.
I did not vote because I like Autumn Elizabeth the best!!!!!! (with a Z tho..) but Ava is a gorgeous name just way overdone (esp where we both live !
I voted for Ava Elisabeth bc it beautiful and classic. It's popular--oh, well. If it is beautiful to you and has a special meaning, don't worry about it.

But I agree with some PPs that combining the two options is beautiful too! Autumn Elisabeth is a great name!
