i am so frustrated with my library, that keeps putting dare wright books on the top shelves in the childrens' section. argh.

i don't believe in censorship, but i do believe in discretion (well, a little, anyway!). i don't think her books are really meant to be for kids. i asked them once to shelve it as an adult book.

in truth, i love the books. i like the art, i like the use of a childlike voice when making sense of abuse. but honestly, they AREN'T FOR CHILDREN!!!!!!!!

am i a prude?

If I had these books in my library, I'd probably shelve them in the adult section. I take issue with the "don't leave me - I'll do anything you want" plea. The spanking bugs me, too.

Knowing the history behind the books (Dare Wright's past) makes them a little out of place in a children's section.

I do have to say, though, that they are beautiful books when taken at face value.

I had a thread about this book last year I think. Dd and I were attracted by the nice photography work and super shocked by the story! The author has a heavy past no doubt.

They don't strike me as kids books, but then I've never kept my kids from reading adult material. I guess being involved and available to talk about it is more my approach than keeping it elsewhere. I dunno....

I read these books when I was little & my mom still has them and reads them to my little girl. In short, they freak me out. I specifically put one "up high" that has a scary bear in the woods and Edith tied to a tree. I basically discourage them being read to my daughter--so much disconcerting content that it's really tough to soften them as you read.

i hear ya, i just still get really really sketched out by them. like, where's the line between how much dysfunction is really explainable to a toddler and, well, isn't?
