Best first food for a baby with intolerance?

Well, I have still been holding of because I am terrified of Meadow having a severe allergic response to solids like Elle did. However she is really so ready and I am going to go ahead and start very very very slowly.

So, what should I give her as a first food? Our ped said rice cereal since it is the least allergenic thing I can try (per his opinion). I know how everyone here feels about rice cereal so please don't flame me the only reason I am considering it is because I want to give her something that the chance of an allergic response is slim KWIM? Ok so, if not rice cereal what? Avocado? Sweet potato?

Thanks!!
Amy

Our Dr. told us that pears are one of the least allergenic foods.

Ds is allergic to rice, among other things, and I only found this out b/c of reactions through my breastmilk when he was very young. I didn't start grains with ds until around 1 year old and he doesn't eat much now.

Ds first food was local, organic summer squash - cooked. He liked it and tolerated it well. We then moved on to give him local, organic zuchinni. That went well too. I wanted his first food to be a vegetable. He really liked and preferred veggies early on which I attributed to when I introduced them and that they are easy to chew (when cooked).

Good luck.

There are recommendations out there for meats as the first foods. Stick to turkey and chicken as beef and pork occur more often as meat allergies.

I've also heard pears.

I have heard the pears thing too, and also what a pp said about there being a recommendation for meat being a first food with a hx of allergies. We used avocado as a first food...

Based on my highly allergic kiddo, I would say pears or zucchini. DS loves zucchini and likes pear applesauce alright too.

Check out the Joneja allergen scale too:

We did pears, sweet potatoes and organic brown rice cereal for ds2. Ds1 had no reactions to those foods. Ds1 had a reaction to avocados so I wouldn't do them.
