My grocery bills of late, I mean! We are a family of 4 with 2 dogs and a cat, and I just spent 172.00 at the grocery store. It's been averaging $130--150 a week of late. This week was more b/c I needed dog food and some other household items like trash bags, soap, etc. that we were out of.
I know this topic has been oft-discussed, and I've gotten lots of good ideas here for cutting back and purchasing less at the store, and making wise purchases. Like most of you, I don't buy much in the way of processed foods. We never buy cookies, pastries, etc. at the store, although I do buy crackers and rice cakes sometimes. We have meatless meals several times a week, I try to buy organic cuts of meat but sometimes find it is not possible financially. We also eat a lot of organic fruits and veggies--VERY expensive. And I'm not just talking about the grocery store prices---our local farmer's market is outrageously expensive (1.00 for a small organic peach, anyone?) and the farm stand right down the road--one mile down the road---charges 5.00 for a small container of strawberries. I picked my own once to save a dollar fifty a pint, but can't always find the time to do that.
I have found little ways to save a dollar here and there--the convenience store down the road sells a local brand of milk for almost half the price of the big chains here. So I buy it there almost all the time. And there is a small fruit stand down the road that sells all manner of produce and sometimes I can get a good price there, sometimes not.
I guess I am just venting here. I refuse to shop at WalMart, though I know I would save 25-30% off my bill if I did--and that's a lot of money. But I don't like the quality of many food items there, and I hate the place. Enough said.
I think we're going to have to do a garden next year!
It's just getting so discouraging. I feel like I would have to buy ALL generic and bad organic brands, and very little fresh produce in order to really make a dent in my sickeningly huge grocery bill.
Oh, I live in CT btw, that may have something to do with it. But still!

: The dog food was a huge dent--40 lbs. for 33.00. Even that is less than what we used to pay for a premium brand from the pet supply store--we went down to Purina One from Natural Choice. It is the food overall that is so much these days (human food I mean). I would say it is the produce (esp. organic) that is kicking our budget in the butt.
