Any nursing mamas have luck with Raw Milk products who couldn't use pasturized milk?

Just wondering if anyone has had luck consuming Raw Milk products who couldn't with pasturized dairy (milk etc) because of your breastfed babe reacting to the dairy.

My ds reacts to any pasturized dairy when I eat it (through my breastmilk). I've basically been off dairy for well over a year now however I am working on getting some Organic Raw Milk products (milk, cheese, butter, cream & I would have to make the keifer) to see how they might work out for us. At this point only I would consume the Raw Milk products-- ds is still getting my raw milk.

Anyone's story of what worked or didn't work would be appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks for the reply treelover.
I've had several replies on my double post on Traditional Foods subforum-fyi-for anyone else wanting info.
We got some raw milk today, just waiting for dh to bring it home. So, we'll see what happens and how ds tolerates it through my breastmilk. I haven't had plain milk forever.

My sister used to raise cows and people could drink her cows' milk that couldn't drink regular cow milk because her cows were not fed corn. Just something to think about!

my daughter and i have trouble with dairy in general, but we have healed our guts to the point that we can now tolerate some dairy, like 24 hour yogurt and specific cheeses and butter. however, we still cannot tolerate any RAW dairy. it's got me baffled honestly, i'd always heard raw was easier for the body. but in our case, it's the opposite. we have the same issue with raw honey. my theory is that pasteurized foods have less intact proteins and so might be easier for our bodies.

I have also heard this personally in our milk coop about soy feed too.

24 hr yogurt, aged cheeses and cultured butter proteins are partially broken down by the action of food enzymes and probiotics. This might be why they are more easily tolerated. Also the lactose in them is only a very trace amount.

The casein micelles (proteins) in pasteurized milk are curled up and harder to digest than raw or cultured dairy. The calcium is also less bioavailable.

Raw honey contains a lot of pollens which are filtered out in processed honey. I would do very tiny amounts until your body gets used to them.

JaneS, any ideas why raw milk and butter would be fine, but not raw cheese? I can't stop scratching my head!

I have just been able to reintroduce raw dairy with no ill effects seen in my 1 year old (he's only getting it through me) but dd and ds1 still can't tolerate it at all in any form.

I find that myself and my baby (both allergic to pasteurized dairy) can both tolerate a little raw milk (no more than a glass a day but not every day) but we tolerate yogurt just fine. Cheese is the worst, so we use raw cheese and I try to use it sparingly. But I love cheese so it's hard. Oh, and we use cultured butter and no problems with that either.

There is some chemical in aged cheeses produced by the bacterial action. Pecanbread Yahoo group was talking about it some time ago that many people cannot handle cheddar for this reason as it contains a high amount of the "something or other".

Good news though for your lil' bunny!

Absolutely. My DS was showing sensitivities to dairy until I got back on raw milk. The pasteurization and homogenization processes denature the protiens of the milk so much that many people show "lactose intolerance" to it when there really is none.

Just wanted to note that DS did react to the raw milk from grass fed cows I drank (about 2 cups over a 4 day period...1/2 cup a day). Of course he didn't get any directly it's a reaction through my breastmilk.
I did eat a little raw milk cheddar cheese we got too a couple of times.

I had been using raw honey off and on for over a year so I didn't even think of this but I did get some new raw honey at the same time we got the raw milk and cheese so maybe that contributed too. Sounds like I did too much too soon.
I also froze some of the raw milk to retest it in a month or so (raw milk is illegal to buy or sell in ohio so it's hard to get a little without signing up for a cowshare program). I plan to have 1/2 cup every other day for 4 days and see how that works.
I also want to just test the raw cheese too and have a little 2-3 times in a week and see how DS tolerates that.
As a side note, even though I haven't had milk forever since this raw milk product challenge, it was the cheese that I liked. I'm not bothered by not being able to have milk. It's the cheese and yogurt I miss! I would love to make yogurt with the rest of the milk I have but getting all the necessary items seems wasteful if DS isn't able to tolerate it. Gotta go look into this more.
