If you could only subscribe to one or the other, what would it be...
Brain, Child or hipMama?
Assuming you were into both of them of course!

Hip mama seems aimed at the very young mother in her teens or just barely twenty; so it doesn't get my groove on the way Brain Child does.

I would choose hipMama. I totally disagree with the OP, I don't find it aimed at young moms at all. It is alternative, though, and if you weren't into that lifestyle you might feel like it was "immature" in a way.

However, I don't know about Brain, Child. Tell me about it!

That's a tough choice! I have been meaning to subscribe to Hip Mama for a while now. I wouldn't say it's aimed at younger readers, it's just pretty subversive and probably at times there have been contributions by younger writers. It varies quite a bit on content issue to issue though. I really like it.

Brain, Child is really great though too. You would probably get more actual reading material out of Brain, Child. It has a few more pages I think. BlissfulMama, Brain, Child is basically like the New Yorker but all essays about parenting. It's really good.

I say subscribe to both! I'm no help am I?

HipMama for sure. I'm really tired of Brain, Child -- I feel it's grown formulaic and the writing is so much less sharp than when the magazine began. HipMama is always fresh, thought provoking, and not nearly so self-conscious about it's coolness. Just my take.

For me, it would definitely be Brain Child. I find the quality of the writing to be better and more consistent and satisfying. I agree with a PP that HipMama seems younger, or at least more radical/punk rock (not that there's anything wrong with that--it's just a different stage than where I am right now).

They are both good magazines, but they are different.

I like HipMama but I find Brain, Child grating. There's this smug, jaded tone that just really gets on my nerves.
