Eliminating Dairy brings out soy allergy?

About 2 months ago I completely eliminated all dairy from my diet as well as dd's diet due to suspected sensitivity/intolerance. When I reintroduced dairy, it was very clear that we both could not tolerate it due to our reactions so we are now living dairy free.
After eliminating dairy I started consuming more soy then normal. I made some ricotta cheese using Tofu. I started drinking more soy milk and soy ice cream and soy cream cheese. I've had some gastrointesinal problems with soy in the past, but nothing major. Recently when I have had soy I get a numbness in my throat and most recently, a lump in my throat as well (difficulty swallowing, increased mucous, etc). The last time this happened I got really scared that I was having an allergic reaction so I went ot the ER. It will be awhile before I can get in for allergy testing so in the meantime I am going to eliminate all soy from my diet (no easy task as it is in EVERYTHING!).
I'm just wondering though, did others have new allergy like symptoms occur after eliminating a food to which you had an intolerance (or allergy) to?
I'm feeling very overwhelmed by this. Cutting out dairy was really hard, cutting out soy seems almost harder since it is in almost everything.

I think I've read that soy and dairy allergies are common. I can't remember why though...

I think the statistic is something like 50% of people with cow's milk allergies also have soy protein allergies...

This fall we eliminated dairy from DS1 diet. Everything seemed to be going well. We saw great improvement when we followed the elimination. Since I can't eat soy (DS2 allergy), we had very little incidental soy available for DS1. Once in a while he would have a soy yogurt, and soy cream cheese. As the winter progressed, we started to see behavior issues we attributed to dairy, but only once in a while. It was emotionall exhausting and confusing. I started double guessing the whole thing. Turns out that DS2 is allergic to soy, but since he only ate it occassionally it was difficult to pinpoint.

We were also able to discover that if he takes a Betaine Hydrochloride pill with a soy item, his body is able to digest the soy and he doesn't react. I am not 100% convinced that it fully digests the soy. But, it is hard to tell because soy and dairy are hidden in so many things, and his reactions are sometimes difficult to identify as allergy and not just annoying 4 year old behaviour.

Both DS and DD had dairy and soy sensitivities, they run very strongly in my family. Both times the dairy sensitivity presented itself first (~5 weeks for DS, I figured it out sooner at ~2 weeks with DD), I didn't usually eat a great deal of soy. When I eliminated dairy then I used a lot of soy substitutes and then I noticed the soy sensitivities. DD reacted even worse to soy in my diet than dairy.

This is a quick run-down on soy myths and facts from the Weston A. Price site. You also might want to read Kaayla Daniel's book, the Whole Soy Story. I wish someone had pointed me to these before I spent ten years using soy as a common dietary item. When reading up on soy, I found some physical symptoms which my doctors hadn't been able to explain. Seemingly unrelated, but connected by one word, and one cause is soy.

Hmmm. DS is allergic to dairy, but didn't test positive for soy. However, it appears that he cannot tolerate soy in large amounts. The only soy he really gets is soy yogurt once or twice a week. Oh. And Earth Balance margarine. But if I let him have yogurt daily or give him soy milk, etc., he gets really nasty mucousy poop. I don't worry about smaller amounts of soy in the rarely consumed processed food.

we've been dairy/soy free for 9 months or so now. i thought soy was overwhelming to add too-- but it has really not been so bad. for most people soy lecithin is safe (non-allergenic), and that's the stuff that's really in EVERYTHING. most people say soybean oil is also safe, but hasn't been for us. the big thing is no real option for yogurt or cheese-- unless you can do goat milk-- trader joe's does have a goat yogurt. most people cross react, though.

i believe our nutrionist told us that dairy and soy allergies often go hand-in-hand. my son has both a dairy and soy intolerance.
