Thread Starter
I have been noticing that the books we read at our house are pretty "white" I was wanting some good book recomendations for a teen.
We are going to be reading "The good earth", "cry, the beloved country" and possibly "night"... any other ideas?

thanks

well since no one has replied to my foreign exchange post, and no one has responded to your multi-cultural post, i'll post on yours!

Don't have a book to recommend, but i will tell you that a few years back when my dd was about 14 she had heard of someone going abroad to study while still in high school, and with that goal in mind, her Spanish class took on a whole different meaning. She just left Monday so I am early in my assumptions, but pretty sure that this will be an amazing and eye-opening experience for her to live and school in a different country speaking a different language.

It is the best knowledge in the world to understand people beyond the confines of our country don't you think?

Good luck in your search!

Here are just a few suggestions off the top of my head:

Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi

Jade Snow Wong's Fifth Chinese Daughter

I read Angela Davis' Autobiography when I was a teen (in the olden days) and was really moved by it.

Michael McDonald's All Souls is written by a white man about his own family, but I think it is a really insightful book about race, power, and violence in the US.
