Midwife issues

My midwife and her assistant conference called me last night to tell me that they won't attend me at home (only at the hospital where MW has priviledges).

Their reasons were that when the assistant came over, not everything that they would have needed for the birth was in the same room. Most of the supplies are up there, but the heating pad was in the car, trash bags, bowl for the placenta and cookie tray (for their instruments) are in the kitchen. It was a big deal to the assistant that the bed wasn't made up the way they specified (it's an air mattress, I don't care if it gets dirty) and she basically said that we're not being responsible enough to have the baby at home.

MW also said that she doesn't want to do it at home because my iron level 2 1/2 weeks ago was 8.9 and that I'm at a greater risk for excessive bleeding because of it.

They're telling me this now, at 38 weeks. I don't think I'm willing to go to the hospital. I've always had low iron during pregnancy, and I've never had a problem with bleeding.

Wow, have you asked them if there was something they can do to change their minds? Or thought about interviewing with other midwives or doing an unassisted birth? Maybe if you have a doula come through to help you get everything together they might change their minds. Just a couple of suggestions.

That's ridiculous! : I don't have any of that stuff done and I am 2 days overdue! I am so sorry mama, I don't know what to tell you. That is really rotten to do that to you in the final stretch. As far as iron, can't you take floradix or something just to boost your iron count?

I am taking Floradix, vitamin C and chlorophyll. I just got the Floradix last Monday so I don't know how much it's done yet. I read some stuff from papamidwife on another thread and apparently studies have been done that show that an iron level of between 8.5 and 9.5 is pretty normal during pregnancy.

They said they would consider it if my iron levels went up but then they said that they don't see any point in checking it at my next appointment because I've only been taking the Floradix for a week, so it feels like they're putting me off about checking. I asked if they could do the finger stick and check when I went into labor and they said that wouldn't give them enough information so I'd have to go to the hospital regardless of the hemoglobin number.

I'm currently considering both of those things.

I'm really outraged for you! I wish I had more to contribute than just sputtering disbelief at what a bind they have put you in. I just don't know what kind of excuse they have for attempting to abandon you at the last minute. Just saying, oh go to the hospital is ludicrous, IMO. Bah!

WOW! ((((Hugs)))) No advice and I'm sad and upset for you. I hope you can figure out a birth plan that you are comfortable with with caregivers you are comfortable with. That really really stinks! Wherever you give birth and whoever attends it I hope you can find a way to make peace with it before due day!

I'm so sorry you have to deal with something so stressful this late in pregnancy but if it helps they told me last time that I wouldn't be able to birth at home about this late last time. Don't give up. I think the doula idea is a great one, can you afford it? What about a birth centre as a compromise? Do they have access to one? To be honest though I would feel a bit put out and distrustful of them at this point, not like they would be listening to me during labour. Check out other midwives... don't know what else to say, good luck!

Your MW is WAY too controlling, you're better off without her. Good luck!

The doula is a friend. She'll come for free. They don't have access to a birth center, only home or hospital.

hugs to you mama! I cant' believe that the mw is putting your in this situation so late in pregnancy! I personally would either take this as a sign and go it alone or if your friend/doula is comfortable being there to assist your unassisted. Take some quiet time with your baby about going unassisted.
I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with this mw after this! Are there other mw you can contact?

I'm thinking of you and sending you lots of love!

I had my third at home without a MW. I highly recommend it!

Since these MWs are controlling, and may try to cause trouble, I'd leave it that you are "seeking alternative care" and not give them any information about UC or other plans.

I find that questionable at best. If they're refusing care this late in the game, don't they legally have to find medical reasons for doing so, and refer you to an OB?

Not in your DDC...

That is horrible! I am sorry that you are going through this right now. : for you

They're saying that their "medical reason" is my iron being at 8.9 and they're technically not refusing care because they're offering to deliver at the hospital, just not at home.

So sorry this happened to you, I had my homebirth midwife drop me a couple weeks ago, as well. I'm now planning to just show up at the hospital (UC frightens me).

What a jerk midwife. I hope things work out for you.

not from your birth club, saw your post on the new post search.

A few thoughts.

For three of my hb's my old mw always checked my iron and it was low so I would take liquid chorophyll. I always bleed like crazy after birth.

birth #4 came with a new mw. she never checked iron and I never took chlorophyll. I didn't bleed heavily like what I normally did. talked to new mw about it and another mw she worked with discovered that taking extra iron while preggo made a woman more prone to heavy bleeding. so she no longer checks iron levels. woman normally have lower iron levels its just part of our body getting the baby and us ready for birth. This was also my first baby not to have jaundice.

good mws imo know where everything is but dont expect everything to be in one place or ready.

those mws sound way to picky. i have to but wonder if there isnt something else bothering them and they are using the iron and stuff not being 'ready' as an excuse?
