Green stocks?

HI.
I have an inheritance set up in a mutual fund and I cant stand seeing all the horrible halliburton and exxon stocks showing up every month. I'd like to switch to some greener stocks. I really dont know anything about the stock market, but am interested to hear from others who may have greener stocks. Do they make good money? Even if it is less, this is where my power to help is, and I'd really like to make a point and feel better about where my money is working. Please help!

Check out the Calvert Group - they are a money management firm with a focus on socially responsible investing. There are a few firms with this kind of focus, but Calvert is the first one I thought of when I read your post. More generally, try googling socially responsible investing and see what you find - it's a bit of an industry niche, so there is information out there.

Vanguard has a Calvert fund. Vanguard is very easy to set up and work with.

We have a Calvert fund also, and while I'm very happy with their standards, the performance isn't all that great. We have it in an aggressive growth fund which has grown only around 5% in a year. It's a tough balance though. My FIL is doing very well (near 20% this year) with stocks in companies that make me cringe... We're not quite sure what to do about this. I'd love to also hear other people's experiences.

I'd also love to hear more on this subject. I've been conflicted with the fact that we spend so much of our life trying to buy with a conscience but our investments, whether they are stocks or mutual funds, include companies that we would never support. I've read about a few socially responsible funds but have not done enough research or made any investment changes. Is anyone familiar with the Ariel Funds? I have investments in Ariel which are SRI funds. I’ll have to check my statements and see how they are performing – I’m not good about keeping up on investments. :

I use http://www.socialfunds.com/ to find out information about socially responsible mutual funds. They have nice performance charts so you can compare the funds easily, and they have links to other sites. Personally, I like Parnassus, Ariel, Winslow Green Growth, Domini, and Citizens, but I know there are other good ones out there too.
