Tax free weekend

We have one coming up here in NC. Does your state do this? Anyone know where we can find info on what states do this and when? Thanks!

I thought I remembered Massachusetts doing that for some reason. But there isn't much point that I can see as NH has no sales tax, so we just go up there (we live only a town away from the border) whenever we are buying anything big.

What are the dates for Tax-Free Weekend in NC?

We do it TN, I think it might be in August before the public school year begins.

If I remember correctly, it's the first weekend in August here in NC. But unless you're buying big ticket items (computers and such), it's really not worth it. Most of the stores are having an awesome sale this week, and a lot of them will have some good sales right after tax free weekend as well. I've also talked to people who have said that they've been told by employees that some stores actually mark up the prices of items for that weekend, to make up for the loss.

ny does a clothing tax free week (except on things like individual clothing items over $125, etc). its normally towards the end of august (kids here go back to school after labor day) and sometime in january.

PA has one in August usually to get people ready for the back to school frenzy. But clothing & food are already tax free here, so it is only really good for large purchases like a computer, etc. It always seemed like a scam to me, just a ploy to get you to spend more $...but then again I live in a state where the 25 cent pack of gum is 25 cents, and not 29 cents, like in Maryland.

In the 20+ years I've lived in CA, I don't think we've ever had one. :

Florida does it sometimes at the start of the hurricane season to encourage people to buy supplies.

Never heard about it in Maine

Just an FYI to the person who said the stores mark up their stuff to make up for the loss.....there is no loss. Businesses who collect sales tax simply charge and then remit that amount over to the state. It's a wash for the business, they are merely a conduit for the state. Much like payroll taxes. They may indeed mark up the prices, but not to make up for any loss. Only to take advantage of customers.

You can go to the state's website to find out about sales tax holidays. Florida has two of them.....one for hurricane supplies just before hurricane season, and one for school supplies/clothing before school starts. All of the information for Florida can be found on the Florida Department of Revenue's website. All of the states have a similar website for the tax adminstering agency of the state. In NC it would be the NC Dept of Revenue.

I think Massachusetts does it in August... I agree too that unless your buying a big ticket item (and even then they probably are marked up) it's just a ploy to get people to spend more $$ than they typically would because it's "no tax day"
