where to find cheap fabric for children's bedding?

It's time for my son to move to a twin bed and I was hoping to make some of the basics for his "big boy" room (bedspread/quilt, curtains, etc.) but I can't find any cute fabric that's not ridiculously expensive.

Any suggestions? Budget is key, so if I can't find a deal on fabric, I'm going to be stuck with buying something ready-made. I was hoping that sewing would save me some money, but I guess the manufacturers get such a good deal on fabrics that I can't make my own for as cheap as I can buy ready-made. It's frustrating!

Try Wazoodle.com for some cottons. They tend to be fairly reasonably priced. However, you can probably get stuff even cheaper at a local discount store. You're right, manufacturers get the cloth for way cheaper. It's hard to compete when you take into account the time it takes to make your projects - sometimes I just suck it up and buy.

I've had great luck in the past in finding cute sheets and using them as yard goods to sew curtains and duvet covers. If you find a pattern you like, buy in full or queen size. Especially when purchased on sale or clearance they're often less expensive than buying fabric by the yard!
