However, bouncing once-- I've never known a bank not to put it through at least once more before you get the big NSF letter. It doesn't make much sense.
Absolutely happens, just bouncing once. I've seen our banks do it here in Canada. Maybe they're just pickier here?

Generally out of state checks take quite a bit of time to clear, the bank may release the funds based on your account history with them but checks can bounce upto 30 days after deposit. Ive worked in the legal dept of a bank as well as DH. Your bank will have a deposit policy and funds availabiltiy policy which is what the branch is required to go by.
Banks now also charge a daily fee for having a negative balance, i know that just makes the problem worse.
I would ask your mom to cover the fees and bills ASAP.

Im sorry this happened and I hope it gets fixed soon.
I've known banks to check if you can cover the amount with what's already in your account before releasing the money. A just in case tactic.

Also, did you tell your mom how much the fees were - it wasn't clear to me what they added up to, but she may be thinking you were talking about a $25 bounced check fee and not $250 in fees, kwim?

Upon further reflection, I really only have experience with the bouncing from a corporate perspective, so maybe they have different requirements for personal accounts. On corporate accounts, they'll try to push it through two or even three times.

No, I told her. 13 NSF fees at $35 each. :

She knows our account over $600 in the negative because of this.

She has the money, my grandpa died last year and she inherited his estate, my SIL says she just went and bought a plasma TV the other day.

She was defensive when I very politely emailed her about it, so I'm extra hesitant to talk more about it to her. But I will today....wish me luck. My dh still doesnt know....I'm holding my breath.

If she doesn't pay, you could always file a small claims case. I'm sure you dont want to do that, but it is an option.

i'd keep bugging the bank to refund the overdraft fees.

Yes TOTALLY and even threaten to take your business elsewhere. I mean you can make a serious stink about it. And take your kids when they are hungry to the actual office.

Something similar happened to us and basically when we went to the credit union office they told us if we applied for overdraft protection (which we didn't know existed) they waive all the check overdraft fees.

It sounds like she's not going to pay. As was posted upthread, talk to the branch manager's boss and see if they will help. Ca you or your husband ask for an advance on the next paycheck? Is there anything you can sell/pawn to get out of the hole?

If you do decide to take your business elsewhere, check out a credit union. We have had MUCH better experiences with credit unions than banks. CU's are generally not trying to make a profit like banks are, so they have less fees and more customer-friendly policies.
