I have a question: Where ARE you?! It's your spotlight week!!!!

AHH! It’s me!!! I’m SO sorry. I’ve been feeling really crummy lately and totally forgot about this. (I passed out twice at work this week; it turns out I have incredibly low blood pressure. So now I’m eating a lot more salt and drinking more, but I still feel AWFUL. Grr. Any tips, anyone?)

Molive—What actually brought me to MDC was PETA. It’s kind of a weird story. I used to be incredibly, incredibly mainstream. I don’t even think I realized there was such a thing as “non-mainstream.” But one day, I rescued an abused guinea pig (long story) and PETA helped me with some legal issues. I started reading PETA material and realized that there was so much that nobody was telling me. Like, about where our food really comes from, where pets in the pet store really come from, etc. And then I started wondering…what else is nobody telling me? It was so eye-opening to find out that there was so much more information out there than what I had been raised with. I started to do more research about all sorts of things. And when we started to plan for a baby, I started doing research to find out the whole picture about family-related stuff. Which is how I found MDC.

For this birth, I’m planning a CNM-attended hospital birth with a doula. I really wanted a home birth, but we’re not really living somewhere where I’d be comfortable having a baby, and we don’t have a birth center here.

Favorite food: probably home-made pizza on whole wheat crust from trader joe’s

Favorite pastimes: spending time with my DH, meditating, working out….I wish I had time to have more..

I still don’t know how many kids I want.

Favorite color: blue

I have a million names I love. My DH has a whole bunch he loves. But we only agree on ONE name, and it’s for a girl: Naomi. So if this baby is a boy, we’re stuck.

I’m closest to my sister, who’s 4 years younger than I am. I definitely consider her my best friend.

I actually haven’t bought anything for the baby yet. I’m from the Middle East (Jerusalem) and it’s considered really bad luck to buy anything for the baby until the third trimester.

Zjande—I met my DH in Jerusalem. I was doing research on congenital ambiguous genitalia (fascinating, and also a great conversation topic at cocktail parties). He was traveling around trying to find himself. Instead he got into a conversation with me at a cocktail party.

I don’t garden, but we belong to an organic CSA and I sometimes help out on the farm. I love it.

I have one pet, the guinea pig I mentioned before. I had to hand-feed him for months while he was recovering, and we really bonded. Now he runs after me all the time like a little puppy (he’s free range) and he gives me little kisses all the time. His name is Brownster.

F & P--I would probably most likely want to visit Costa Rica. I would LOVE to see the rainforest.

I’ve been craving a whole lot of fruit. Mostly watermelon.

KH—I work full-time now, which is exhausting. I’m doing research and some administrative stuff at a pediatrics office.
I think I’m moderately crunchy.

Starry—I wish I could say I had time to read something earthshatteringly fascinating. Nope. The most interesting thing I’ve read lately is probably Marie Mongan’s Hypnobirthing book (which I did not like—that’s why I ordered Hypnobabies instead).

My favorite fruit is watermelon.
If I had $100, I’d probably buy…that’s a hard one. Hmm. I have to think about it.

Would you mind telling me a bit more about why you didn't like this book? Maybe start a new thread? A friend lent it to me, along with a million other books, and if it isn't worth reading I don't want to "waste" my time, so to speak. I have 2 small kids, and not a TON of free time, ya know?

Starry Mama-I'm glad you asked that, because I probably should clarify. There were definitely parts of the book that were interesting. For example, she has an interesting chapter that traces the history of childbirth and analyzes the reasons that we now associate it with pain and trauma. But I was looking for a book that would actually give me insight into childbirth hypnosis, and it really fell short in that area. It didn't have such a great discussion about hypnosis, and it came with only one CD and a few scripts that were supposed to induce a state of hypnosis. The only problem was--they didn't, and I think part of the reason may have been that since I couldn't read the scripts to myself while in hypnosis, I had to have my DH do it and he just doesn't have a relaxing voice. I ended up ordering Hypnobabies, which has a ton of CDs and is also much more informative, IMO.

Have you started practicing Hypnobabies yet? If so, what do you think so far?
I've been meaning to ask you the same thing! I didn't want to start too early, since I'm afraid I'll get burnt out having to do it everyday for so many weeks. But I have been listening to the pregnancy affirmations (which I love) on the way to and from work. Also, I read session 1 and did the bubble of peace script with my DH. I'm thinking I'll start the CDs and do the rest of the reading at about 20 weeks. Have you started yet?

I've been listening to pg affirmations on and off since the very beginning (the hypnobabies course was the very first thing I bought after we got the BFP!) and I've listened to the week one tracks (Special Place and Painless Childbirth) a few times each, but not on a regular basis. I've read session 1 and the exercise info from session 2 (but not started the exercises yet) and haven't had DH do the bubble of peace script for me yet (keep forgetting).

I read some great advice from Sheridan on the Hypnobabies Yahoo Group on when to start if you want to start early (early being before 32 weeks, I think) and I'm gonna basically do what she said. A lot of it is what I've already been doing so far, then I'll start lesson one at 24 weeks, and spend 2 weeks on each lesson. Then I'll start maintenence around week 34. If you want to read her whole post, it's #41336.
