I want to make a doll for dd.

So I really want to make dd a waldorf doll for her 2nd birthday coming up in October. She's such a little mama to her "babies". I was planning on ordering a kit and I have a few questions.

I've seen both weirdolls.com and dancingraindolls.com both pretty highly recommended. I love the hair options at dancing rain, but am intimidated by the idea of the crocheted cap... That was the reason I was leaning towards ordering from weir and getting the pre-made wig. But I really love the yarn at dancing rain, espescially the blends. So for a knitter, whose never used a crochet hook for anything other than fixing dropped stitches...how hard would it be for me to figure it out?

Also, how hard is shaping the head for a total novice...is it worth it to buy the pre-made head? The money's not really an issue, but if it's pretty simple, I'd love to make the whole thing myself.

Thanks for your advice!

I bought the "my baby" kit from dancing rain and really loved it. I bought the premade head though - as my first try, I wanted to see a well-done example first before I attempted it on my own.

I'm a long-time knitter, I can't crochet more than a simple chain to save my life. After MANY tries, I did figure out how to do a cap, but I made it to small. DD's birthday was the next day, so I ended up making a sewn wig, which has held up really well.

I don't know much about weir, but Amy at dancingrain is VERY helpful, and very nice to work with.

thanks alaska! I was planning on thd 12" Friendship Doll. I think I'll go ahead and order and get the pre-made head. Seeing an example is a good point. I don't know that I've even seen a waldorf doll in real life! Now to decide on the hair...

I REALLY liked the yarn blend that Amy put together. Not only does it feel great, it's customizable.... I sent her a picture of my DD, and she matched her hair color perfectly.

i just finished my waldorf doll!!! dd turns two in 3 weeks and i can hardly wait to give it to her! i bought a 16" weir doll kit and did the whole thing myself, even the head and the hair. this was the first one i've ever made. the instructions were excellent and the materials that came with it were wonderful. i'm making dd a dress to match her doll too. then, for christmas, i'll make her a doll quilt and dh will make her a waldorf cradle.

Well, I just sent an email to dancing rain dolls. I tried to order online but kept getting an error message, so I just emailed my order. I can't wait. I'm sure I'll be back with a million questions once I get started!
