Front load dryer for $400!!

Hi all. Just wanted to share. Hope this doesn't get too long. Our 13 yr old washing machine is on it's last leg. My husband has JB welded it a couple of times. We have been nursing it along, but it's only a matter of time. We have towels on the floor around it!! So I went to Lowe's yesterday--"just to look"--get some ideas, plan ahead. I want to replace the old washer and dryer with a full size, stackable, front loading, high efficiency washer and dryer & use the space the previous side-be-sides took up to put in some shelving (we need to create more space!!). So the salesman comes over to ask what I'm looking for and I told him. He said that if I was interested he had a good deal on a dryer. I really need the washing machine first....but I'll listen. He said they just reconfigured the store and the stock clerk accidently opened up the box for a Whirlpool Duet dryer, not realizing there was already one on the floor. There is nothing wrong with it at all. They just have two of them on the floor. The original price was $898, marked down to $808. But he said he could do quite a bit better. So I said, What is quite a bit better? He said $400!!!OMG!! : Uhhhh. Can't pass that up. He said he will periodically get a return from a delivery where there might be a tiny, little scratch but the customer rejected it. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. So I think we will go this route and try to wait out the washing machine!!!

I don't know why I never thought about it before, but I think I shall never buy full price appliances again. Unless, of course, something breaks and we just get stuck having to get something quick. But I was so thrilled after that whole deal yesterday. I was on a high almost for finding that kind of a deal. My husband hooked it up last night and we already put it to the test. Works great!!

Share your "deals" with me!!!!! And for those of you that have front loading, HE washer & dryers, what has your experience been, especially with the Whirlpool Duet brand? From some of the reviews I read online, some people love theirs and others have had problems. I guess we will see!!

I almost always ask for "scratch and dents" when buying appliances or even furniture. It's so worth it! Our biggest deal was a Whirlpool Gold dryer (not a front loader, but definitely Energy Star rated) for $200--had a big ol' scratch down the side and the person who ordered it didn't want it. Who sees the side of a dryer, I ask you?!

That's a slamming deal on your front loader--hope you can find a washer for the same!

What a great bargain!

A tip for those afraid of scratch and dents is to pick up some auto touch-up paint in a similar color - covers up scratches very well.

I priced Costco and they were still in the $700's. Needless to say, I was quite pleased.

we went to sears service center "scratch and dent" we got a 3 capacity HE front load set plus a 25.5cu foot stainless steel fridge, plus the bases for the washer and dryer... all for $1400... the fridge alone was nearly double that price had it not had that scratch. I think the washer and dryer pair were 700 or less, slightly dented.

I think the Duets do very well -- I asked a repairman we had out what kind he rarely had to repair, and he said the Duets were really good. When we have the funds for a new washer and dryer, we'll be going with that or Kenmore (made by Whirlpool).

You got a great deal there! I hope they make a mistake and open a washer for you soon!

I also went to lowes. My sister told me to look for the scrach and dent. I got a dryer for $175 because it was scrached and missing the cord which cost 20 dollars.
I also bought a washer for $225. it had been droped but works. It sounds like it needs a new spring inside. (I will take it apart someday)
The washer isn't front loader but it will due until I have the money for one.
Congrats on your find.

We recently bought the Duet Sport set and love love love them! We got them at a discount, but not as deeply-discounted as you did!

The washer spins so much water out of the clothes that they dry on the line extraordinarily fast. And even though they sell huge-capacity machines, even the ones that sound kind of small can hold a lot of clothes, since there's no agitator in the middle. The dryer is great, too.

My parents have had a Duet set for five or so years, and never had a problem. They are very reliable.

OK, here is our deal.
We needed to get a washer and dryer for our new house. We went to craigslist and found a smoking deal. Frigidaire front loading washer and dryer. This is the smaller front loader and just a regular dryer. However, this washer still fits almost a ful hamper load of clothes. The dryer was $100 and they were throwing the washer in for free because it needed a part and wouldn't spin. We looked up the part on line and found it for $77. DH was able to put it in. So, $177 for the set, plus the Uhaul trailer rental. Two years of continous use later, the washer is still going strong. The dryer is in our garage in stoarge because we rented a house that had a set. We figured we would put the wear and tear on the dryer that is here, but we replaced their washer with ours because ours is so much more efficient.

I got a state-of-the-(7years ago)art dryer for $75 at Sears because it had a GIGANTIC scratch on the side that sits against the washing machine. It is also black, whereas my washing machine is white. They are both in my basement, so who cares! And at that price, I don't think I would care if it were in a visible area, either.
