Catholic Question: I'm so confused about missals - Page 2

It might be? I've only been a few times so I'm not sure.

Arduinna - that's the Prayer of the Faithful, or Intercessions.

Responsorial Psalm is when the Psalm is read or sung and the congregation responds with a "refrain".

http://www.cantius.org/webstore/Missal.htm

All readings in both English & Latin (Douay-Rheims Bible for English Scripture readings), morning & evening prayers, etc.

Plus, Missal purchases from them support the parish.

www.cantius.org is the parish website. Think you'd enjoy looking at it.

Yes, I used to live in IL for 2 years and we went to St. John Cantius. I think it is the most beaustiful Catholic Church in America. It is breathtaking. You can take a cyber-tour on their website.

Something with English and Latin on facing pages would probably be best as my Latin is pathetic.

about this:

I noticed a few additional places listed in the phone book that offer the TLM but they are not listed on the Diocese website. Does that mean they aren't in union with the church? I'm just now finding out about Old Catholic Church and other groups. I always thought that a Catholic Church was a Catholic church and now I'm :
Yes, a Marian Missal would be the best choice for ease of reading and learning since the Latin is on the facing page congruent to the English.

The Old Catholic Church is something altogether different from Traditional Catholics - a whole other kettle of fish!

Ok I got my Latin missal ( 1962 Roman Daily Missal published by Angelus press) but I'm confused over the notations on the side. I can't find a legend that explains what they mean but I'm assuming they are clues as to actions done when reciting or some such. I'm referring to the V and the R with the / through them, and the ANT. I'm guessing the iron cross sign is where to make the sign of the cross during the mass? The bells are self explanatory at least

Hi Arduinna - I have that missal (along with several others!)

The V. is what the priest says.

The R. is what the server says in response.

The ANT. is also a response by thte server, but it is an abbreviation for the word, "antiphon."

And, yes, the cross symbol is where the priest (and faithful) make the Sign Of the Cross.

Also, at a High Mass the faithful are basically standing whenever the priest is standing and kneeling when he kneels. You stand each time he says, "Dominus Vobiscum" - the response being, "Et cum spiritu tuo" (And with thy spirit) and then you sit. You stand for the Nicene Creed, the Our Father, the Gospel, and final Gospel. You kneel at bells of the Sanctus for the Consecration and remain kneeling until you go up for Holy Communion. The customs of kneeling etc. are slightly different for Low Mass, where you spend most of Mass kneeling and don't stand nearly as much.

I just follow what everyone else does as far as standing and kneeling

And here I thought the R might be responses from the congregation. :

Thanks for explaining.

Is this the one you're referring to?:

I've ordered the lovely lace mantillas from Halo Works before and Maureen, who runs the website is wonderful about answering any questions. I'd suggest you email her (from contact page) and maybe she could even send you a scan of a page, if you needed to see it. It's a WAHM business, which is nice to support when you can.

Amazon has what appear to be old copies from the 1960s or so:

In any case, get on Halo Work's email list, because they'll often send discount codes, or offers for free shipping, etc.

Rookie here, I'm still learning the terminology.
Arduinna, you were correct in your original assumption. The Latin Rite is one of 23 churches in the Catholic Church...the other 22 churches follow the Byzantine Rite, or Rite of Constantinople. All 23 churches are under the authority of the same Pope. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_Rite

There are many different Masses within the Latin Rite, as described by Stacy. Many Catholics are unaware of the existence of the Byzantine Rite, so it is often assumed incorrectly that "Latin Rite" refers to the language of the Mass. Pope JP2 called the two rites the "two lungs" of the Church, and he encouraged all Catholics to experience the diversity of the Church firsthand. Because the 23 churches are in full communion with each other, Latin Rite Catholics may receive Holy Eucharist at Eastern Catholic churches and vice versa.
