A "green" lunchbox and thermos?

Thread Starter
I'm interested in purchasing a healthier lunchbox or lunchbag and thermos or some sort of water bottle for my daughter (preferably a thermos so we can pack soup as well) and am stressing the importance of buying "greener" products to her.
I'm looking for something that has cute designs to choose from, if possible! After all, she's 6!

Thanks,
Manda

not sure if this is exactly what u r looking for, but here are some cute LEAD-FREE ones (scroll down to about the middle)http://www.hannaandersson.com/catego...20Bags%20Packs

I'd get a Laptop Lunchbox and maybe let her decorate the plastic box herself with stickers.

I find the lunchbox to make going green easy since it has all those little boxes really for fresh fruit or a handful of snacks from a big bag. I keep a cloth napkin in it too (can't say my boys have ever used the napkin, though).

Here's an idea for a bag, it's made of recycled juice boxes, each one is unique. This is the small size but it comes in other sizes: http://www.reusablebags.com/store/ba...nch-p-649.html

Or here's some cloth bags (cute designs!): http://www.reusablebags.com/store/mi...ugs-p-413.html

Laptop Lunches have pink and purple box colors now too! I second the laptop lunch - my ds has one and I have the Lunch Date system, LOVE THEM BOTH! The little containers are great, they can eat right out of them. The plastic they use is manufactured in California using plastics (polypropylene and polyethylene) that are FDA-approved for food use. They do not use any binding agents or plasticizers in the process. They do not use any materials that are suspected carcinogens or endocrine disrupters. I still don't heat things in the plastic containers, but I send one of the thermos things for warm food.

They are expensive but they are really durable - we have had ours for about a year and use them 5 days a week and they look like brand new still.

Target always has stainless steel wide-mouthed thermoses and insulated drink cups with cute designs. The price is good, too. My dd's have flower and hello kitty ones. They have lasted for over a year. Now is a good time to shope for one because they won't restock those until next year.

Is there a link to find out more about the type of plastic that is used for these lunchboxes? I've gotten rid of all my plastic junk so I'm a little nervous about buying plastic.

From their FAQ page:
"The outer container and inner containers are made of polypropylene and the lids are made of polyethylene." http://www.laptoplunches.com/FAQs.html

Info about types of plastic: http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/plastics.html

These are great!

Thank you so much. It was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for- things with cute prints, etc.

We've also decided to get a water filter for the faucet rather than buying bottled water anymore. We do recycle the bottles and I'm not afraid of our tap water, but really prefer a better taste and I think a filter might be the way to go, so the water bottles listed on these sites are right down our alley right now too!

She's at daycamp right now, but I can't wait to show her all the cute options that can actually be earth-friendly rather than buying something that smells terrible and is made who-knows-where off the shelf from Walmart.

Right now she's trying to decide between this one:

and the monkey one shown here:

She loves jungle things and penguins, so I'm sure whichever one we choose will have something to do with those things if possible!!!

Does anyone know if the mimi sardine or sazura bags hold a laptop lunch box? My dh bought my dd another bag because her l.l. bean bag is too small but i am worried about the possibility of lead.

She chose the leopard one from Hanna Anderson and we ordered it tonight.
We're also going with a Kleen Kanteen rather than a Sigg because we saw some Siggs in Whole Foods and every single one of them was already either dented or had a broken cap. Ugh!
I'm going to order KK's for myself and hubby too once he starts back to work (he's a teacher) and we've got regular checks coming in. Right now we've been buying water in plastic bottles, and while we do recycle them, the worry about the plastic we're drinking out of PLUS the expense is just crazy. We're going to look into getting a good water filter and using KK's instead.

Thanks for all the links and input!

For those of you with the Laptop Lunchbox, do you find the food is all jumbled and messy-looking when they open it? I can't imagine my kindergartener will keep it perfectly flat while carrying it to school in his backpack. Does it leak? Do they eat food that is intended to be heated up (like if you had leftovers in one of the containers) cold? Or do you put leftovers in a thermos?

My dd uses this one most of the time
http://store.greenfeet.com/itemdesc....Ware-Stainless

She's had it since last year and it has really held up well. Her friends think it's very cool. When she's taking a hot thermos lunch she uses a cloth bag because the thermos won't fit in this lunchbox. When she uses the stainless lunchbox she packs a jucebox in the bottom along with some fruit or crunchy snack and the sandwich (or whatever) fits in the top).

I'd been wondering about that lunch box for awhile. I was worried it wouldn't hold enough food.

If we took the juice box out it would hold enough food for and adult's lunch. She had a stainless thermos for her drink but it started to leak. Now I do the juice boxes. Nothing like trying to un-stick important papers from the inside of a backpack.

Bump! I actually found this thread by Googling "mimi sardine thermos" lol.

My kids have the Hanna lunchbags that match their backpacks, but I just found out they have lead inside of them -- not on parts that come in contact with the child or the food supposedly, but still... time for totally lead-free.
