my very sweet, VERY LARGE baby boy was born via c-section on 7/12/07. after all these months of planning, preparation, anticipation and excitement for a natural labor, i ended up having to schedule a section due to some possible health risks for my baby.
i had a u/s on 7/11, it's the doctors' practice to do this at the end of a pregnancy when your AFP test came back abnormal, as mine did. so, reluctantly, i went in(i was annoyed--i had to go to another town to do it in, reaarrange a schedule for my older ds, etc.)
the u/s showed asher to be around 12 pounds. that in itself didn't bother me too much. baby had dropped, he was in position, and i was contracting, fairly strongly, about every 6 minutes..so i was pretty sure he'd be on his way in the next few days. the doctors, though, hated the idea of his size(of course). they sent me for a level 2 u/s to confirm the results of the first, with a perinatologist. when i saw her, she confirmed his size, and also some other possible factors that made us very, very nervous. first--his kidneys appeared to not be filtering water out properly. his stomach looked very large, even for his size, and i had apparently WAY too much water for what i should have at this point in pregnancy. my water also appeared to have meconium in it, and that really troubled them(and me.)
so, ultimately, we decided the best thing to do was get him out asap. they scheduled the section for the next morning, and also had a neonatologist there just in case something was wrong.
i felt it was the best decision i could make with the information i had. my baby's safety is the most important thing, and at that moment, things were looking bad--even though things are ok and he's very healthy, i don't regret my decision. it was made with lots of thought, heartache, and with the best of intentions.
anyway, for the stats! asher benjamin was born at 9:44 a.m. on 7/12/07. he was 11 lbs, 5 oz, and 21 inches long. i got to nurse him right away in recovery, and he's doing fabulously. so far, he's a great sleeper, which is much different from his big brother, and we're all totally in love with this little(big) guy.
it's been fun sharing my pregnancy with all of you! and congrats on the births of all of your babes.
