Which costs less? Fans or air conditioning?

I am trying to conserve energy in our household and reduce the amount of time that we use our air conditioning. Sometimes I use a small fan during the day to help circulate air and to make it feel cooler in the room. My thought is that a fan will cost less and conserve some energy.

What are your thoughts?

Absolutely the fan will cost less. The AC involves a fan, a compressor, etc so it is much more demanding of electricity than AC. The months we have to run the AC in our small office at work the electrical bill is significantly higher than if the temp stays at a point where we can get away with just using the fan. At home, we don't have AC but use fans (ceiling fans and stand alone fans) and our elec. bill is way lower than our friend who lives alone in a smaller house but uses AC.

The recommendation is to only have fans on in rooms you are in, although I have admit that when it is really hot I like to leave on the fan in my BR because it feels better right when I walk in (trying to break that habit because it is probably more psychological than anything )

Fans cost TONS less than AC. If I recall correctly, your average fan is around 1-2 cents an hour to operate. Air conditioning is at least 10 times that in our home.

Don't mean to hijack... : We only have AC in our bedroom, but we leave the door open so it goes down the stairs. Other than that we have one fan that's on all the time now b/c it's just too hot without it and DS and I really mind the heat. Anyway, I don't know how much our AC is, but do you think it would be cheaper to get another fan or 2 than running it, even though it's only one room?

Oh for Pete's sake...I'm sorry to hijack, but I'm suddenly kinda worried about my username being blocked because of these posts lately... Why judegirl, of all things??? Is this automatically generated, or a real person?

Fans cost less, and they don't pollute nearly as much.
