Must have song for your labor music ... and please share yours!

Okay, I work at home, and I'm crunching on the last bit of a HUGE project and my landlord is building house practically in my backyard. Of course today is sawing and other power tool use day.

So, I've popped on my Bose noise cancelling headphones, and I'm listening to my "Labor Day" playlist.

So far, I'm loving every song I've put on it, but I wanted to share one in particular, for anyone else who's making labor music mixes ...

From the movie Charlotte's Web, Sarah McLaughlin's "Ordinary Miracle."

If you haven't heard the song, prepare to

My other songs so far include:
Something So Strong - Crowded House
She's Always a Woman to Me - Billy Joel
Amy Hit the Atmosphere - Couting Crows
I'll Have to SAy I Love you in a Song - Jim Croce
Ordinary Miracle
Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel) - Billy Joel
Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce
The Rainbow Connection - Sarah McLaughlin (also the baby's song that I play to him)
The Wonder of You - Elvis Presley
These Are the DAys - 10,000 Maniacs
Loves Me Like a Rock - Paul Simon
Don't Dream it's Over - Crowded House
Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes - Paul Simon
Comin' Home Baby - Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis
Just the Way You Are - Billy Joel

Anyone have any other good ones they want to share?

Well for me it is Vivaldi's Four Seasons. I need very intense music, no words or even words that I could be thinking in my mind. I need crescendos that match the intensity of the process. So if I can find that CD I plan to take it with me again.

I'm going with a different approach this time ... last time the hypnobirthing music drove me batty!

This time I want music that I can feel, something more tangible, and that I can get absorbed into. I'm really particularly liking the Paul Simon and the Billy Joel. Going to put some more jazz/blues into it too I think.

My DH and I had a great time with this after our childbirth class for dd1 - he liked Pink Floyd's "Welcome to The Machine," and my vote was for The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated."

My midwife asked me if there was any music I wanted playing in the OR for my c/s and I'm really of the opinion that I don't want to choose music that might make the OB crazy (she/he is the one with the knife!!)

I'm going with a LifeScapes CD... Rain and Thunder. Nothing calms me more than the sound of gentle rain so along with a lovely print of a rain storm, these will be my focal points. I do have some other things as back up if I start feeling the need for something more musical. Tori Amos if I need womanly power, Nine Inch Nails for intensity, or Loreena McKennitt for spiritual earthiness.

last time i really enjoyed rage against the machine (f you, i don't do what you tell me!) and jack johnson and the ramones and ani difranco... i'll probably just bring a whole pile of cds again.

I don't think I have ever listened to music while laboring, but I love most of the choices here! I have so much going on at home with all the kids, and people over, I think music would throw me over the edge.

I feel like the odd woman out. Silence. Absolute silence for me.

Oh I wish! If only I could get silence!! I swear Costa Rica is one of the noisiest places in the world to live. If it's night dogs barking all not, it's rooster that can't tell time, or the cement mixer churning in my landlord's yard right now, or our other neighbor coming home with her noisy muffler at 3 in the morning and letting her dogs out to bark, then whistling for them to come back, um ... the trash truck every Tuesday and Friday has to give the neighborhood a friendly triple honk of the horn at 6 a.m. just so we know he's come ...

there are good sounds too, like songbirds, wind in the trees, oranges falling off the tree onto my roof, torrential downpours on the tin roof ... if everything else could just switch off long enough to appreciate the good sounds, I'd be alright.

As it is, I'll need the music to drown out the rest of the country

If you can stomach vocals during labor, I highly recommend Bob Marley's collection. It's so relaxing and chillin'.

I have about 42 songs on dh's iPod under "Labor Music", 99% are instrumental. One must-have is Luna by Alessandro Safina (a singer, so this one is sung), it's my dd's favorite, and she's still in utero

I saw a beautiful birth video http://www.chickenpeople.com/index-6.html

I loved both of the songs they used :
On My Way---Phil Collins (From the Brother Bear Soundtrack)
Beautiful Boy---John Lennon

I added both of them to my ipod for labor

Great list!

But me, I can't get into music during labor, it's too distracting. I like silence.

DH wants to make me a labor mix. I have no idea what I'll be in the mood for, though! I bought a CD of nature sounds. I think I'd like the thunderstorms and ocean tracks. We'll see!

For me, I just want a couple of songs from a bunch of artists that I love. Also, my dh made me a cd at one time and the songs on there make me melt.

I MUST have some Radiohead, Weezer, Beatles, Afghan Whigs (sexy), and Mazzy Star (makes me feel so relaxed and lovely).

A couple of my favorites are REM's "At My Most Beautiful," Stevie Wonder's "I Believe" (well, I love a couple of Stevie's songs) and I'm with Emily on "Fake Plastic Trees."

I would love a couple of songs off of Counting Crows' August and Everything After, but unfortunately my copy of that cd was stolen a couple of years ago. My only concern with my current list is that I have a lot of poppy upbeat stuff, but those songs normally make me feel so good. We'll see how I feel about them come D-Day.
