i have heard mixed things on this...can you do that? is it controversial? talk to me about it if you have a minute. i really wanted a homebirth with ds...but due to health problems and him being really overdue, i was forced to do a hospital birth which led to a c-section...i really want to do a homebirth next time...is this a reasonable wish?

I've met few midwives who do not do HBAC but I believe it varies according to the laws in your state.

Mine does in TN. Her only requirement is that you get an u/s to make sure the placenta isn't attached to your c/s scar.

As far as I know, the midwives here all do HBACs depending on the situation.

I help moms with HBAC--and yours is likely a reasonable wish! I would, if you were interviewing me to be your mw, want to hear your story, know about your health and such things before deciding...but I've not yet turned down an HBAC request.

The controversy is about uterine rupture--which is a rare event in an un-interfered with, un-induced labor--because babies and even moms can die with uterine rupture. So this is a risk you would have to be aware of--and we would be thinking about things like how far you live from the closest OB hospital (time is of the essence with a rupture).

In both the states I've lived and practiced in - many moms had to have a homebirth midwife for a chance at a VBAC because either the hospital or caregiver had some reason why it couldn't be attempted there. I dont think I've ever met a midwife that didn't do HBAC's...? Maybe I just assume we all do them and never really asked - am I way off?

I think it's legal in California.

Not legal here in Arizona.

Hbac

Is it legal in CA?? What an unfriendly state we live in, AZ. I know that even where it's illegal, certain mw's will do it. The problem is finding them and getting them to take you. They certainly aren't going to advertise the fact. If it's legal where you are though, you shouldn't have a problem providing there aren't legitimate health reasons. Good Luck!
