Uncharted Territory

It's my due date!! I've never been here before. I know at my next apt, the OB will start talking about induction. So I need to be informed and as well-read as possible on this whole thing.

What are appropriate, sound, logical medical reasons for induction? I can think of PIH or other high blood pressure related issues, but nothing else. I'm sure there IS more though, and what's a typical way to ensure that Baby and Mama really ARE healthy as they wait (im)patiently for labor to progress on it's own?

I'm walking a fine line in my head between knowing my baby is ok with no reason to pursue medical intervention and knowing that I don't know everything, and I don't want to be stubborn and miss something important. I'm having serious trouble judging baby movement anymore, b/c he's so large and so out of room, that's one of my major concerns.

I pm'd you with some info... another reason they would have for an induction would be the placenta deteriorating. This is unlikely, but something to keep in mind. As long as you feel baby moving at some point during the day I wouldn't worry too much about movement at this point. There really is just NO room in there for them to move too much. (Although Sage continually surprises me on this one

I recommend reading Henci Goer's "thinking woman's guide to better birth". It has lots of info on when is appropriate for induction as well as when is NOT, and also, if you end up being induced, how to have the best experience possible.

Ok, so what can I reasonably expect at my visit later this week? If she starts talking induction right away, is it reasonable of me to suggest that I'll "submit" to nst's, offer to do another u/s (not an issue for me), or something more/else?

I just found THIS website, and while it's clearly medically-slanted, it does have a ton of info and gives me a lot to work from.

I haven't looked at that site just yet but if she suggests induction next visit I'd inform her that she's being a bit pushy. I'd explain that you would like to delay that for as long as possible... it may only buy you a week but it will buy you "some" time.
