Having a car shipped/driven to where we are

DH's mom has offered us her old car. She lives in ME and we live in FL. Has anyone ever used one of those car-shipping or drive-away services? Any chance it would be cheaper than buying him a one-way plane ticket and paying for gas and hotels? Are there other ways to cheaply transport a car?

The only experience we had with shipping cars was shipping DH's from GA to WA. It was $1200, that was with ~40 people going in and splitting the costs of a carrier.

We shipped DH's car from WA to MA (FIL drove our other car for us which was so nice of him, but it wasn't feasible to do both). Since we didn't pay for FIL's plane ticket (they were visiting anyway) having him drive the car was much cheaper (we paid for hotels). I can't remember exactly how much it cost, but it was around $1000 to ship the one he didn't drive. If you go that route, get a lot of quotes, they varied greatly.

My dad had a car shipped from CA to WA and I think it was about $800.

I don't know about cost but I drove for a driveaway service once and it was amazingly cool. I needed to move from Seattle to Chicago and so I packed all my stuff into the Saturn they gave me and drove it home. Then I turned it in and got my 300 dollar deposit back. Now that I think about it, it was crazy cool. I almost forgot about that.

ETA: you could always take a Greyhound bus down to drive back too. Save a bundle over a plane if you buy in advance. And Greyhound is fun! At least I think so.
