how much do newborns sleep?

seriously... kalia sleeps all of the time. it kindof worries me. she's 1 1/2 wks. i remember my preemie sleeping all of the time, but not my full-termer. she does have a couple of awake/quiet-alert periods a day, but, other than that, she's asleep, only waking to eat every couple of hours. (she eats and poops & pees alot too!) anyone? what's normal?

Oliver's like that too, at this point. He's 5 days old.

I thought it was 20-22 hours per day at first...

I feel the same way! I do not remember Elli sleeping as much as Millie Jane does! I saw our Ped. today for the first time since she was born and he laughed at me in a very kind and gentle way. As long as she is peeing pooping nursing and when she is awake alert and looking around he said stop worrying and count my blessings!

this one is sleeping a lot too, it's great! ds1 was like this, ds2 was not. my old midwife told me they grow the most when they're sleeping and it's been true for my kids - ds1 gained so fast, ds2 was a fussy baby and has always been smaller...and now ds3 gained 1lb in 1 week!

Newborns sleep?? : Seriously, Elizabeth is sleeping on my chest right this minute (while I'm obsessing that she needs to wake & eat), but except for the evening she was born, she's been non-stop nursing - I mean, cannot set her down, roots when you try to just hold her - between dinner time & 5 AM. I am getting 2-4 hours sleep here, & am really hoping now that my milk's in, that our night times will not be like this much longer. My other DD didn't do this.... we had the same sleep-all-the-time problem as the OP, but she nursed a lot & made plenty of soiled dipes.

I'm so glad you posted this! I've been thinking the same thing. Ds2 sleep ALL day and night. He has maybe an awake period for about an hour where I have him kick naked on a towel for an airing Ds1 was definitely not like this - I remember never being able to put him down for a second and endless jiggling and rocking to stop the fussing. I feel extremely blessed this time around as far as easy babies go.

My first two didn't sleep much, but my new guy, Owen sleeps all the time. And he's still doing it now at nearly a month old. I'm sure it was at least 22 hrs a day at first, and now must be about 21 hours.

Ok, so once again I have a non/barely-preemie pretermer, and both have slept a good 22-23 hours a day. My mom always said that my sis did the exact same thing (also 4-5 weeks early), and they were waking her up to feed her for weeks. We finally stopped waking Bella up to eat around 4-5 weeks, but she was having no wake up hunger cues really until then. I think it is normal for them to sleep that much for at least the first 2 weeks. Bella is finally having longer awake periods, but she is starting to get unsettled during that time. Usually, I can wear her, and she loves it. When she is unsettled (between 7pm-10/11pm), the only thing that works is having her out of the sling and in our arms. It is the only time of the day that she hates the sling. I am going to have great muscles soon!

Maya is 2 weeks old and she sleep a ton too. Each day that passes she's awake a little more. My first dd(4) slept a ton the first 2 weeks too and then changed thereafter.
