Dealing with the Heat

Right now we are going through a heat wave. Yesterday was 46C (114F), which because I live in Canada is really really hot. We don't have A/C, and I'm boiling!
So I'm wondering if anyone who is used to dealing with this kind of heat has any ideas of how to cool down. My dh thinks I'm nuts that I'm not enjoying the heat as we hardly ever get this hot, but he's not pregnant!!

If it's a dry heat, try spraying water on your skin. That produces a cooling effect. In a humid heat, fanning yourself will do the same thing. Drink LOTS of water. Stay out of the sun. Your mental attitude will help - if you accept that it's hot in July and that this July is even hotter than normal, it may help it not "seem" so hot to you. I know a lot of this may be common sense. I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just telling you what's worked for me.

I'm dealing with some crazy humidity here & thinking, "Did I always sweat this much?" Lol.

I wish I could've given better advice. Having spent 2 of the last 4 years in Iraq should've given me some insights, but I think I just kinda got used to it. And drank A LOT of water.

Good luck!

If places like grocery stores and libraries do have a/c, go spend the hottest part of the day there. Or at a swimming pool, or put a small pool in the shade outside if you can.

At home you can take a cool bath, lay in front of a fan. Where cotton clothing...I don't necessarily think less clothing is better since cotton absorbs sweat and bare skin just drips.

Does it cool off enough at night for you to sleep comfortably? I spent a heat wave in Michigan once upon a time with no a/c and trying to sleep was the worst. Hope you cool off soon.

I don't have much advice, just wanted to sympathize with you! I'm in western Minnesota, and it's been pretty warm here (90s) with high humidity (which is what really makes me feel lousy). Although the temp is not in the 100s, the heat index is.

We also don't have a/c. I just sit in front of a fan, don't do anything too strenuous, and drinks lots of water and eat fruit like watermelon (don't need an excuse to do that!). I have a 2-year old who likes to play outside, regardless of the sun, but I manage that by taking a nice long walk with her as soon as she wakes up in the morning, when (despite the humidity) the air still feels somewhat refreshing, even if it's sticky.

We're also lucky b/c we have an indoor pool in our town, so at the end of a hot day we go there to cool off. That feels great on a pregnant body! Is there a pool anywhere nearby?

I agree with trying to get out of the house to an air conditioned place. The fanning yourself and spraying yourself are good ideas too. I am just used to the heat though. I live in Texas.

Go someplace with free air conditioning! Especially a mall. Malls are always SOOOOO cool. Same with libraries. Ahhhh. We have a mall near us that has a free playground in it, so we go there when its hot.

Make sure you're drinking enough water and chew on ice chips/pieces. It mkaes your mouth get all numb, which feels wonderful in the heat, and helps you stay hydrated.

When I lived in Arizona I would fill a spray bottle with water and a little bit of peppermint essential oil, then put it in the fridge. A cool refreshing pick me up!

I used to go see movies when we didn't have a/c. I used to pay for a movie and then sneak in to see 2-3 more.......

Thanks for all the helpful tips. Really just not used to it being this hot up here. I agree that it's also maybe a bit in my head. I've been in hotter weather when I lived in Brazil, but I expected hot weather then.
(and I wasn't pregnant) but I also had a/c down there. Which helps a lot!

Thankfully the terrible heat ended, so we had a good sleep last night... but it's supposed to be really hot again come friday. So thanks again.

Come to work with me! Its in the upper 90s lately and I about die being outside (I hate heat, it's time to move to Alaska...I keep putting it off) but this week has been so nice because inside my work building I wear a hoodie all day. It's the perfect weather in there for jeans, a hoodie, and flip flops.

The forcast this weekend is 85-87 and they had it marked as pleasant. HA! 75 is the high end of pleasant.
