Homemade Playdoh

I don't know if anyone else has heard this but according to the Poison Control center store bought playdoh is MUCH safer for your children than homemade.

A neighbor of mine had homemade playdoh and her daughter ate it and was VIOLENTLY ill. According to the PCC, the amount of salt in the homemade stuff is highly toxic to children because of the salt. 1 teaspoon of salt can shut down the kidneys of a toddler. The store bought stuff will cause diahrea but is non-toxic.

Anyone else aware of this? Or have alternatives.

Oh, my goodness! I wonder about bacteria too with homemade. My kids are older, and I make homemade playdoh sometimes for them, but they wouldn't put it in thier mouths.

I grew up on homemade playdough, and honestly, I dont have a problem with it. I'm suspicious of the "too much salt = toxic" claim, and hey, homemade playdough has been around a LOT longer than any fisherprice version.

I make mine using water that I've cooked beetroot in for red, and kale or spinach for green, carrots for yellow.

I don't think that homemade play-dough is a hazard... Of course too much salt might make your kid feel sick, but what if your toddler got hold of a bag of potato chips? It's one of those things where you've just got to stress that it isn't something to eat... "You can make pretend food, but never put it in your mouth." If you think your kid doesn't get is, supervise more strictly.

I'd rather have my kid playing with salt and flour, than with Lord knows what they put in store bought stuff. It might say non-toxic, but I wouldn't say that makes it a safer alternative than what amounts to salty bread dough... There are all kinds of creepy things that say non-toxic on the package. *shudder*

I am skeptical....I have worked in daycare for over 10 years, and I have known children who ate it regularly like a snack before getting caught...and no one was ever the slightest bit ill. I am talking a lot of playdough too, it's a regular occurence in daycare....
