Front loaders ?! Yay or Nay?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask....but....I'm looking into front loader washing machines because we have water (or lack thereof) problems. Can anyone suggest brands I should be looking at or avoiding? Any tips?

Thanks so much!

I have a Whirlpool duet front loader, and I've had a lot of problems with it, to the point I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. Although it could be how it was delivered and set up, I have heard.

Not all front loaders are the same. Some american companies make them without heating elements which doesn't make much sense ( or clean laundry) if you think about the cycle length.

I have a GE Adora which was the best bang for the buck in the under/around 1000 $ compartment. it has a sanitizing cycle which I love for diaper washing.

we have a bosch set & i couldn't love them more! seriously, they make me a bit weak in the knees :

i can't find the link right now but if you google "that home site" you'll find forums for all kinds of home repairs and there's a laundry forum that can make you completely dizzy. I spent months researching in that forum! I'm such a geek but i take my laundry very very very seriously!

my thoughts exactly! i too have a sanitary cycle on my LG washer that someone else mentioned on their washer. it is fantastic for doing our towels and tp.

we were using a top loader washer before we got our LG. after we got it, i did a load of laundry and noticed how everything came out cleaner than ever! i ended up re-washing all the previously 'clean' things that were clean per top loader standards.

I've not had any trouble with it or the dryer. It has great settings. It even has sanitary setting.

My parents have one of the older ones, I can't remember the name/brand but it was "HE" for High Effiency and they usually don't call them that now. It was recalled because the bearings broke and theirs did break too, but they received the "fixed" version replacement (free) and it's been fine. They have had it for probably 5+ years and my dad raves on and on about them! It saves so much water and the faster spin cycle cuts drying time (though we all line dry so that's not such a big deal) My dad even swears it cleans better.

I just bought a Whirlpool Duet one marked down because it had scratches on the sides. It's even nicer and quieter than my parents' older model, but I have only had it for 3 weeks so I can't tell you about the durability. So far it's been great. I know that I had used both at my parent's house and I was only going to buy a new energy efficient front-loader when I got my own.

My sister's boyfriend worked on appliances for a while and FWIW He said never to buy anything LG brand because they are cheaply made.

I've had two and really like them---they do seem to extend the life of clothing a bit. From what I've heard (and experienced), they can be prone to being smelly, especially Kenmores and Maytags. If you get one, be sure to leave the door open between uses---that really helps the smell.

Ah yes. My parents learned to leave their door open because it got a damp moldish smell, but the machine was also in the basement and the whole place is dampish and a little smelly anyway. I just automatically started leaving my door cracked without thinking about it It's just what you're supposed to do.

Get the frigidaire. We have the basic kind and it has been a work horse. The only thing that has gone wrong with it is, I wore out the knob, lol. So we need to order a new one to replace it.

Stay away from whirlpool. Everytime a friend complains about their washer having problems, it always turns out that it is a whirlpool.

LG is a brand- not short for anything as far as i know. They also make cell phones, electronics, etc. At least I assume it's the same company.

I have a Duet. I love it. I feel very strongly about it, considering it's an appliance. I may love it more than my fridge. Our standards for purchasing it were merely that it fit a ton of laundry in it.
