Has anyone tried homemade laundry soap? - Page 2

Those of you who make the powdered version...could you post the amounts of ingredients you use to make a large batch please? Is it the same as above, just multiplied?

I just use 1 bar of FN, about 2 cups of borax, and about 2 cups of washing soda. Nothing "exact"...it's kinda different every time.

I don't use Fels Naptha because I don't like the added fragrance and try to avoid petroleum products (the naptha in Fels Naptha is a petroleum derivative). Those reasons, of course, are just a personal preference.

I use a plain, pure soap - no fragrance, no additives - bought online, or made myself. Otherwise, my recipe is basically the same.

I just want to mention that the powdered form of the detergent means the naptha is in powdered form - not grated like thin strips of cheese. I use the teeny tiny grater on my cheese grater and the naptha turns into powder.

For larger batches, just multiply the amounts. I usually do a double recipe.

At the most I use 2 TBSP/large load. Not any more, and usually less :-) I find it does a better job than what we'd buy at the store or online!

ok where do you get citric acid and also are you ladies able to get washing soda without ordering it? I can't find it anywhere.

Bekah, I don't know where you are, but around my home, washing soda is in the laundry aisle of most grocery stores (by the borax, conveniently enough).

I started making the liquid version of this soap a few months ago, before the baby came. I was really pleased with its cleaning power in our semi-hard water...if you had soft water, you might cut out some of the borax. Since we started washing diapers daily (girl goes through about 30 a day, seriously) we've saved a lot of money already and will save a ton by the time diapers are done for.

Also, to note, our washer is a front-loading HE washer. I debated for a while as to whether the soap would be good for the HE washer, but decided to try it, since it doesn't contain any sudsing agents except the bit that might be in the Fels Naptha, and sudsing agents are what's missing from HE detergents. I've since decided that this stuff hardly sudses at ALL, and is probably great for the HE washer.

And, finally, I find I itch less now that I'm not using detergent to wash my clothing. I used to be a very itchy person--not rashy or anything, just itchy--and now, well, I'm not!

Oh, and maybe she just isn't rash-prone, who knows, but we've had no baby-butt problems around here, which is another thing I was on the lookout for.

sooo, how well does this work for cloth diapers? Because Allen's Naturally (esp when you have to ship it) is EXPENSIVE!

I have the same question! I would love to use this for diapers. . .

Also, does anyone have a cheap online source for fels naptha? I can't seem to find it in the grocery store.

I live in AL and have looked at several grocery stores and cannot find the WS. I may just order online I think it would be worth it.

I use a version of this, and have been pleased. Many add a bit of tea tree oil too.

I use it on everything, including cloth diapers. I switched maybe 6 months ago, and have no complaints.

For those of you who don't use the Fels Naptha, does it matter what kind of soap you do use? We use the Kiss My Face Pure Olive Oil soap for showering, etc. It's made of olive oil, water, and salt. Would that work? Would Dr. Bronner's be better?

Thanks!

Great info. thank you.

My recipe for laundry soap is:

1 bar of soap, grated
1 cup borax
1 cup washing soda

Mix and use 1 to 2 tbsp per load.

We don't have Fels Naphta here so I use Sunlight soap bars, available in the laundry aisle. I'd use whatever I find in the house in a pinch, as long as it's a soap bar and not a mosturizing bar.

Edit: It works great in a front loader because it doesn't sud.

For diapers, I add a tbsp of vinegar in the rinse with 4 or 5 drops of lavender eo.
