help me start soaking my grains

Hello everyone,
I am new to TF and I have ordered a copy of nourishing traditions to help me get started.
In the meantime, I want to start soaking my grains.
We eat a lot of rice, brown rice pasta, potatoes, some beans and quinoa.
Which one of these do I soak - I was thinking the brown rice, beans and quinoa can all be soaked. Do you just soak them in water in the refrigerator overnight? Also, are potatoes part of this diet? We have wheat and egg allergies so we are already limited.

This article was helpful -thanks. I am still a little confused on some things. How do you keep the water at 140 degrees all night? Do you just use warm water and then let it sit on the counter. Does anyone use the crockpot for soaking? Your ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My crockpot on low with the lid open keeps the temp around 120F so that's what I use for about 12 hours for beans.

Oh I've been curious about using the crockpot somehow for this - do you remove the lid entirely or just keep it partially open? (I'm assuming the latter, but just want ask anyway!)


To the OP - right now I really only soak my steel cut oats, but I add about a TBS or so of rye flakes, cover them with water, add a squeeze of lemon juice and cover the bowl with a cloth. Leave it on the counter overnight and it is ready to go in the AM. Soaking with dairy is another option (whey, yogurt, etc) but I got used to using the lemon juice while I was dairy free for a while so now I just do that all the time.

I have to leave it completely off or the temp gets higher than 140 and the beans cook. I found out the hard way.


Word of caution if using your crockpot. Water evaporates very quickly at 120F. Add way more water than you think you need. Much easier to take water away than to add water to burned beans. I also learned this the hard way.
