Keri, there's SOOOOO much conflicting info on how to supp!! Right now we're doing breast for 30-40 minutes, and then supp'ing about 30 minutes after that, so he doesn't associate one with the other at all (I hope). I express out what he didn't get on his own to keep my supply as high as possible and use that or we do an oz of formula if there isn't enough.
There's some literature out there now saying to supp with the bottle or other supplementer FIRST, so baby is happy when they start at the breast and more likely to nurse longer. Theory being that if they bottle first they satisfy the intense hunger and will then suckle/nurse more contentedly on the breast. So far this doesn't work for Jeffrey, as he just falls asleep on me! But it would have worked for Mark Thomas I think.
