Flies!!!

Thread Starter
I am getting slammed with pestilence.

I already having an ant and slight termite problem.

Now we TERRIBLE flies- swarming around the inside and outside of our house.

I have fly paper up right now to catch them inside.

We usually keep our house all opened up with very little problem, but suddenly its DISGUSTING.

I have a fly trap for outside, but I REALLY hate the attractant smell and even though I'll put it away from the house- I feel like I'll still smell it.

What the heck?

Our neighbors have horses, could it be that they arent cleaning their yard enough or something? I'm not icky either- this is GROSS.

Help!

I wish I could help you, I am having the same problem. They keep bothering me too, always landing on my head or legs. I swear, I swat one dead and 10 more pop up. Also, the farms are on the outskirts of town.

We got one of those sticky fly traps and put it near our trash can. Not the stringy strip kind those get tangled, this is like a toilet paper tube covered in glue - it also catches those fruit fly/gnat type things.
I dunno why flies are so bad here, it's the city so no horses or cows, and we have a big back yard separating us from others, maybe the neighbor's dogs? I dunno.

sorry to ask but those sticky strips you talk about, where the flies get caught...what happens to the fly when she gets stuck? does she slowly die? aaahhhhh...i can´t take that, sorry.
i know some people hang a plastic bag full of water...no idea how this works but i think it does.

I am trying to find a solution to my maggot problem and stumbled upon this thread.
I have found maggots on my kitchen counter...since I found them, I have bleached the counter and cleaned all of the surrounding cabinets, plates, silverware, pots, pans, and spice cabinet.
AND, they KEEP returning!! :
I keep my kitchen really spotless, b/c it's the only place that I mind if it's not organized.
I find at least 10 a day just in this one area of the counter top.
I keep nothing on this part of the kitchen counter....nothing.
ANyone have a solution or reason or help of any form to get rid of these nasty things??

I think you need to find the source of the maggots. They are breeding somewhere in your kitchen

To every other fly concerned mama out there.....I honestly think it's some sort of fly epidemic.....everyone I talk to around my area has them really bad. Maybe it was a cold winter

Anyone have any suggestions for fruit flies? I'm not willing to spray, but doggone it, I'm getting there! We were fine for most of the summer, but when I made kombucha and left it sitting out, we were swarmed (yes, it was covered) and haven't been rid of them since. It's been weeks -- just as I think we've got 'em all under control, I find them hiding in a new place. Last week I hadn't seen any for half a day or so, and thought we were home free... only to discover that they'd found my gallon of apple-cider vinegar and were clustered around the cover of it!

Grrr. I'm frustrated.

I think a lot of flies has to do with garbage management and closing the house. I could not take flies, so I asked my dh to find a solution. He went to a horse supply and feed store, and they had tons of fly solutions. He chose the bags of water fly traps, and put up three in the backyard. Then, on top of that, he started spraying our garbage can with insecticide on a regular basis, and I made a rule that all garbage must go in sealed plastic bags in the can. I am not happy about the insecticide in the garbage can thing, but you should have seen our fly problem and the various remedies that don't work that we tried.

On top of it, all pet food was moved to one far corner of our yard, away from the house. I am insistent that everyone close the doors immediately and hustle on through them.

We still get flies, but it has gone from 20 a day to 2 a day in the house. I kill any that get into the house with a fly swatter. I have found that if I darken the entire house, and then leave one window bright, all the flies will go there, and then I go kill them.

The most humiliating thing was when I had a dinner party, and offered to send home leftovers with a guest. They eagerly accepted, and when I pulled the tinfoil off the covered dish to repackage it -- a dead fly fell out, right in front of them. They took the leftovers, out of politeness, but I am sure they dropped it in the nearest garbage can on the way home, since that's what I would have done.

It was right after that incident that I got serious about flies.
