Can you recommend a compost bin?

We left ours at our old house so I'm needing a new one. Are the spinning ones better? I just had a square box. They seem so expensive when I did a search online. Anyone have a good place to order from? thanks

we built ours out of scrap wood and made it a three bin system. Is that not an option for you?

We also build a three bin system, but we used wire fencing.

For less than $20 at lowes, we got 4 of those green metal sign posts and pounded them into the ground in a square shape. Then we got a roll of that green plastic fence and some zip ties. Voila! Compost bin. If you don't have a lot of browns, pick up a bale of straw too, and you'll still be under $20. We just use our old newspapers, though. I shred them on once a week.

Good luck!

My understanding is that the spinning ones are faster. They are a lot more $$ though. We bought an inexpensive square one about a month ago. I really liked the look of the Envirocycle spinning composter but since I'm new to composting I was afraid to spend that much and then decide in a month or two that composting wasn't for me.

emski4379, thanks for the link! My parents have been looking for a composter exactly like that, and asked me to find it for them-- so you just saved me a lot of work...

This may sound inaccurate, but has worked better than anything for us... dig a hole about 1' and put vegetable scrap, leaves, or small sticks in it and cover with dirt. We have an 4'x4' area that we do this in, so it gets moved around some/stirred. Everything breaks down fast and we have many big fat worms. I am not sure, though, what we will do in the winter when the gound is frozen.

We tried a couple of other methods with minimal success: putting compost into a box frame created from packing pallettes- this was part of our house when we bought it, and it was not easy for me to access because it was tall. I could not stir or move around the contents. Most stuff took monthes to breakdown. Another thing we tried was putting veggie scraps into a bin, and then hassling it with a pitchfork. This was gross, stuff was stinky, and it took so long to break down. Plus it attacked flies, raccoons, and chipmucks, who would open the lid and make a mess.
