Need advice: Asking about doula fees?

Hi, ladies!

I hope this is the appropriate place to post this question.

I'm pregnant and interested in hiring a doula, but I have very little information about the fees involved. Although my husband and I feel strongly about working with a doula, our financial reality is such we might not be able to hire one if her fees don't fit into our budget.

For some reason, I feel as if it would be distasteful to ask a doula about fees upfront--I am afraid it would seem petty. But cost would honestly be a deciding factor for us.

Is there a resource I might be able to turn to in order to get a sense of basic range of fees for my region? (I live in Athens, GA.)

Can anyone here offer some ancedotal information about a basic range of fees?

OR Do you have any advice about how to tactfully broach the subject with a doula without sounding like I'm devaluing the importance of her work?

Thanks for any advice you can share!

I would just call a doula that you are interested in working with and have a conversation, talk with her a bit about the services she provides and then ask what those services cost. Or you could choose to meet for a first consultation (most doulas will meet you once for free) and talk price at that meeting.

It doesn't bother me if someone asks straight out what I charge, very few people that I know are in a situation where my fee would just be pocket change and most need to know if it is something they can work into their budget. I would rather have people ask me and know for sure than just assume that they wouldn't be able to afford my services.

It's fine to ask. Most of my clients outright asked.

Just ask. Most doulas understand financial situations. They also understand that every pregnant woman deserves a doula (whether they can afford it or not.) You may be able to barter, get a discounted price, or work out a suitable payment method. Another thing to consider is hiring a student doula. You can usually get a student at a discounted rate to free.....

I'd just be up front. Also ask about slide scale fees, that is what i offer. And if the doula you talk to doesn't offer that, she may be able to refer you to one that does. Also you can get douls-in-training for a lower or even free cost. I believe you can call dona to get names of pre-certifiying doulas in your area.

Thanks so much, ladies! I really appreciate your responses. It's good to know that I don't have to feel so uncomfortable about asking about costs.

I know of a great doula in the area that I'm interested in. Perhaps I will send her a note and ask to get together to talk.

Thanks again!
