Marginal cord insertion and IUGR or stillbirth?

Thread Starter
I was told yesterday by a perinatologist doing my high-res U/S that since my baby's cord insertion was marginal, we'd have to monitor growth in the third trimester and pay careful attention to kick counts. She even mentioned that there's some guy in Texas who has home monitoring of his patients with marginal cord insertion, and I might find that on the net, but she thinks that growth scans are fine.

So of course I hit pubmed and the internet when I got home so I'll have lots of info to discuss with my midwife when I see her next. I am VERY VERY leery of growth scans - I'd do them if there was good reason, but it's such a slippery slope, with so much chance for bad decisions!

I cannot find anything at all that even suggests any connection between marginal cord insertion and IUGR, or any complication at ALL, let alone stillbirth. I know it's not velamentous, because I asked her about that (my first child had a velmentous cord), but could I have misheard her? Is there some other description that will get me better pubmed results? I'd like to gather lots of info and have all my questions straight before I see my midwife so I can quiz her heavily.

ETA: she specifically said the placenta and cord are nice and high and well well away from the cervix.

ask this doctor to show you the documentation to back up what he/she is saying. the only doctor web site that I have seen that does tons of scans is that one looking for vasa previa

here is an older article quote but of use I hope

Summary

The site of the insertion of the umbilical cord into the placenta was determined in 940 consecutive term infants. No relation was found between birth weight and whether the cord was inserted centrally, eccentrically or marginally.
