Homemade games

One Xmas I made Mancala games for each family.

Start with an egg carton, the ones that have a double lid (egg shaped that folds under the regular lid) are excellent. Count out 48 pebbles or marbles or those glass pebbles, 4 per cup, 6 cups per side. Put inside the carton and close. Print out Mancala Instructions from internet. Play.

We have a set of homemade games from the Middle Ages too. Use the glass pebbles for men. The game board is painted fabric. Ours is sewn onto a nice backing with yarn for tying it closed. I have no doubt that the rules for Nine Mens Morris are online as well.

DD has been enjoying NMM very much. I may do that one for this year's gifts.

We went through quite the Mancala phase a few summers ago, which is when I did these.

When you get bored with regular 12 pit Mancala, there are variations that use more pits. For those, you use all 24 egg cup pits, but you'll need another 48 stones.

Any ideas for making a more permanent mancala board?
