Birthstory:

On Saturday night we went to a BBQ at a friend's house. I got the usual round of comments about how small I looked and they couldn't believe it was my due date. I said that it appeared that nothing was going on. We went home and went to bed.

Woke up at 6am on Sunday morning. DD came into the bedroom and had some nummy as usual. While she was nursing I felt something that felt like the baby had a shudder. It happened twice. The second time I thought I felt a trickle. I asked DH to take DD downstairs for breakfast. After they left I went to the bathroom and there was a definite trickle in the toilet. In addition, I felt a little "shaky", which was how I felt after the hospital broke my water with DD. I figured my water had broken on its own. It was about 6:30. I went downstairs and told DH I thought my water had broken. He was about to make breakfast. He asked if I thought he should fill the birth tub and I said yes. So he started on that and I called the midwife. She seemed pleased that things might have gotten started. I sort of expected her to drop everything and come right over because we had discussed previously how my first labor had moved along pretty quickly. However, I couldn't really tell if I was having regular contractions so she said to play it by ear and we'd talk in an hour. I walked around a bit and it definitely seemed like i was having regular and frequent contractions, although not horribly painful. I was getting nervous so I called the midwife back. She offered to come "hang out" at my house if I was nervous. I told her that would be great. She asked if I minded if she did a few thing or should she come pronto. I told her to come right away.

I then went upstairs and got into the tub. It wasn't full as we had run out of hot water. I was definitely having contractions that were becoming more frequent and painful. I decided that I'd just acknowledge the pain & say "ouch" when I was having the contractions. DD jumped in the tub with me at first, thinking it a wonderful game. However, she did not like my "yelling" and quickly got upset. We'd called the babysitter but she hadn't arrived yet. So DH took DD downstairs & put in a video. Apparently she could still hear me and was kind of upset about it. Meanwhile i stayed in the tub on all fours and just yelled through the contractions. Poor DH was going between the tub & the family room. At one point I told him I felt like I needed to push. So he called the midwife to find out where she was. She told him "I respect that she thinks she needs to push but I really doubt that she's ready". So DH came upstairs & told me not to push. Meantime the babysitter arrived & got DD to agree to go around the block for a walk. DH then came upstairs.

The midwife finally arrives (it was only like a half hour later). She comes in and asks if I want her to check the baby with doppler & I say yet. It was fine. She then asks if I want her to check me and I say yet. She checks and I think she was surprised to find that I had no cervix and the baby was indeed right there. The next couple of contractions were very intense. Then the baby crowned and that hurt like heck. It really felt like my skin was ripping but the midwife assured me that my skin was just stretching. On the next wave i think I pushed a little and the head popped out and indeed the pain subsided. On the next wave I was able to push (or my body did) our little bundle of joy out. She put him on my chest in the tub and I was able to relax and enjoy. He was out by 8:15am. The midwive made it with 15 min. to spare. The backup midwife, unfortunately missed the birth but got there shortly after.

So it was a very short, intense birth. After thinking about it, DH & I were so glad we'd decided on a homebirth because we never would have made it to the hospital on time & would have had the baby at the side of the road with DD screaming in the background. Would have been ugly all around.
