16th birthday of neice staying with us - what to do?

Hi everyone,

I must admit, I'm completely clueless here, so I could use some advice!
DH's 15-year old niece will be staying with us for a month, starting next week. She's coming from Germany, to improve her english. She'll be turning 16 a couple weeks after she gets here, and I want to do something special and fun for her. I was 16 twenty years ago (gasp!) and I think that 16-year olds of today are fairly different from back then, so I just have no idea what to do for her. Could any moms of teenage girls give me an idea of what could be a fun, "cool" thing to do for her birthday - it will be me, DH, DS (who is almost 2), and Dniece celebrating together. The 16th birthday is important in Germany like it is here, so I want it to be memorable for her.

the first thought is to talk to her when she gets there and see what she might want to do. She might have some or you can offer a few ideas.

Perhaps going out to a nice meal with the family would be special enough for her - she might want to pick a place or might rely on yall for some suggestions. Since 16 is a special year, you might want to make it a more grown-up meal and may end up at a place where a sitter might be a better choice for your son. Of maybe she'll meet a new friend that wants to join you.

Another thought, perhaps a special woman's day would a good treat if she likes those kinds of things. Pedicure/manicure or perhaps even a massage or a leg wax.


Also, talk to her family and find out if they have any suggestions as well. You may find out that she's been dreaming of a certain activity or they may let you know that they're going to be making a big fuss when she's home and that a simple celebration while she's visiting will be just fine.
