Appointments - Page 3

I have an appt on August 28th for my initial visit with the midwives. Of course, most of the ones who were in the practice when I had my son 3 years ago are gone now ;-) but eh, whatever.

I spent about an hour on the phone today all told to confirm that my insurance will cover this practice. It's all more complicated because my insurance is weird (HMO, but no PCP... self-referring) and this practice is unusual (CNMs, but they bill under an obstetrician that "supervises" them... not that I ever saw his face the entire 9 months of my pregnancy or the entire long weekend we spent in the hospital).

The midwives I used for my last two births had this same arrangement. IIRC, part of their charter required them to be under "supervision" from a "real doctor" at the local hospital. While I was with them, that happened to be my doctor for #1, who was a great doctor. And like yours, I never saw her while I was there. I think it's just a formality in states where homebirthing is not legal and midwifery is viewed with distrust. (I was in NC.)

Ha! I just called and my first appointment is setup for Sept 4th!
I told that there was nothing better to do in this town than go hiking and having babies!

I had all lab work done yesterday and get a phone call saying that I have a bladder infection and was prescribed some meds... I don't feel like I have a bladder infection. Hmmm...

My next appt. is on the 24th. It's a two hour class on how to have a healthy pregnancy. I didn't want to go, since I already know how to have a healthy pregnancy but they said I had to.

Then on the 27th I have my first doc appt. I'm hoping this doc will give me an authorization to go Global Maternity so that I can have a homebirth... I still have to see what my husband says though.

I am not planning on using the same homebirth midwives that I had with my last because I don't really care for their philosophies as much as I thought I did. I've got 2 midwives that I'll probably interview, but I don't plan on calling for another month or so. I'm not sure if they both will come to my area, and if I move next spring (which was our plan) if they will come to my new area. I think one of them might.

I'm really early still and don't really want an official appointment until I'm at the end of the first trimester. I really don't see the point before that. I feel great, have no prior pregnancy issues (besides a former midwife that tried to stress me out). I'm not really doing much in the way of testing this pregnancy and very likely will go UC for the actual birth.

If I ate dairy and gluten I would so be going for that Milky Way bar!

I got an appt for Monday. I'm so excited to see my m/w again!

I'm seeing a midwife in the area and planning on a homebirth. My first appointment is Monday.

I feel like all I'm eating is avocados and chips and salsa. There's definitely not enough protein in my diet right now.:

I'm still under the care of my RE, but if the ultrasound tomorrow shows that everything is ok, I will be released to the care of the midwives in the practice. (I have a condition with a high miscarriage rate, and I had a severe progesterone deficiency during my first pregnancy.)

I'm in California, and there's nothing illegal about homebirthing here. Not only that, but this is not a homebirth practice; it's strictly a hospital practice (though some of the MWs in the practice used to do homebirths). Well, *shrug*. However they bill it is fine with me, as long as my insurance will pay for it!

Yay! I'm not the only one around here who doesn't eat gluten or dairy! ;-) Though tonight, it occurred to me suddenly that french onion soup would be REALLY good. And of course, it's only good if it has the cheese toast crust on top! *sigh*

I had my appt. yesterday afternoon. Just waiting for the numbers to come back so I can exhale again. : If all is well, I have my next appt. on the 9th of September. I love my midwife.

I broke down and called my midwives yesterday for the same reasons as Ralphie76:

"But I will want to meet with my midwife just to get the ball rolling- more for emotional support and the fun stuff rather than anything diagnostic."

We don't have a need for an ultrasound or any testing, but I do plan on having one U/S at 20 weeks just to take a peek and reward myself for all of my hard work by finding out the baby's sex.

My midwives' assistant (who attended my DS birth and I LOVED) was excited for me, but when I spoke to my midwife she actually laughed that I was calling already! She said I could come in in a month- Sept. 4. (along with ORLY? and KariM)

I may have to call and reschedule though, as my DS is constantly asking when we are "going to see the midwife". I am not sure what he thinks she is, but I can't wait to take him. Hopefully we will have a shot at hearing the heartbeat at that point.

my first 2 I used a dr.
I am thinking about a mw this time around.

does anyone know if there is a bottom line price difference. We have inurs. but they only cover 80% so I would like to weigh all my options.

I told hubby that I will be 9 weeks along when we get to see the doctor, he was so excited, he asked eagerly, "Will we be able to hear the heartbeat by then?!"

Sometimes, I think he is more excited than me. He's pretty cute.

I had my first appointment today. Just to get reaquainted and pick up their handbook and fill out some paperwork.

I have to say it's very, very odd after having been to a regular practice (FP with #1 and OB with #2) for my last two pregnancies. I love my MW, but I'm not terribly good at making quick decisions and am pretty used to people telling what to do, when and how to do it! Plus, it was interesting just sitting there and chatting about other things. I did get a iron level and sugar level check (both perfect) as well as a urine test and BP reading. It kind of made it seem more real to have all that stuff done! I will go again in about 3 weeks, just because that will be the only appointment dh will be able to go to before he deploys.

i just got done with my first appointment. They took blood for my thyroid and did a pee test. My next appointment will be in 2 weeks on the 27th for a early u/s and then to talk with a midwife. I hope my thyroid is normal and it stays that way the whole time.

Just got back from my first appt. Since I have a short luteal phase, my midwife put me on progesterone, and I'm kind of stressing about the whole thing now. Otherwise, everything was fine. I go in for my first ultrasound on Sep. 10, when I'm 10 weeks.

Ooh, that sounds good! I almost want to drive to Trader Joe's for some salsa verde. That stuff is good!!!

Hey! Maybe, we're seeing the same mw? Audrey?

My first official visit with her is on the 23rd. We've already met though and she's pretty wonderful. Not sure what we're doing at that one. I totally forgot what she said. There goes that absentmindedness again.

I'm going to have to decide on a HB MW. I am just not sure about the ones I used last time. BUt I liked them ok, so I dont want any hurt feelings, they are just a little more conservative than I want this time. I thought I wanted it last time. Well I have a scar to show for that. But being a doula and involved in the birth arena around here, I also dont want to burn any bridges. So I have to do some research and see who I want to use.

AS for backup care, I didnt really do that last time (saw an OB once for bloodwork) but I might go ahead and establish a relationship with one of the CNMs in the area as a backup for u/s and such. I'll prob go ahead with the 20w u/s this time to check placenta position and all so we can proceed with the HB.

But if this baby decides to stick breech like DD, I dont know a HB MW that would touch a breech vbac, there is one OB in the area who would, so I will switch to him. But because he has routine 2 hr waits, I cant see using him for backup the whole pregnancy. Yeah, its way too much to think about.

All that said, I'll probaly start scheduling things in Sept.

IIRC, there was no individual line item for a mw-attended birth or MD-attended birth... just for a normal birth w/o complications, a complicated vaginal delivery, an uncomplicated c-section, or a complicated c-section.

BUT... those were the MSRP; the insurance company (which was from the same organization; go figure) has other pricing arranged.

The cost of prenatal care is usually bundled into the billing for the birth, so the hours wouldn't likely make a big difference. Your biggest expense is going to be real estate if you're in a hospital room, I'm thinking. If I feel up to it ;-), I'll go dig out my bills from my son's birth and see how the original $32,000 broke down (the insurance co. negotiated that to $5k... makes you wonder, doesn't it?)
