Anyone up for a letter to the editor???
This "editorial' appeared in today's edition of what we like to call "The Daily Astonisher" aka: the Spokane, Washington Spokesman-Review.
The author of this unnecessary piece of attempted (yet, unsuccessful) journalistic "humor" has tried many times to be sharp-witted, sarcastic and funny. In almost all cases, he fails repeatedly.
How about letting the Spokesman-Review know how this poorly written and insensitive attempt at "humor" lends credibility to those that place public breastfeeding up there with a man exposing himself to others or anyone urinating in full view of their fellow human beings.
He freely admits to insensitivity towards nursing mothers and that it is his problem. The trouble is, Mr. Oliveria, that when you choose to post such information in a public newspaper blog, you reflect the views of the newspaper that pays your salary, as well. After all, the S-R didn't stop you from adding this to your blog. Nor did the S-R refuse to post it in their on0line edition of the paper. (((Anyone out there get the hard copy of this paper? Is the piece in that??)))
Contact the Spokesman-Review directly and let the editor know that this is not acceptable material. Do NOT post on Mr. Oliveria's blog (more fuel for a future ill-mannered, inaccuracy-filled piece of drivel relating to the militant breastfeeders in the world and how the rest of humanity must be saved from such exhibitionists...).
Let Mr. Oliveria know that if you don't like it, then simply don't watch. Remind Mr. Oliveria, and the others quoted in this piece of trash, that breasts are simply designed as the receptacles of food for our young (oh, and by the way, D.F., they are called breasts, not "girls" by anyone save, perhaps, the woman attached to them). That ignorant and rude people like him are much of the reason that so many women in this country are nervous about breastfeeding in the first place.
Remind him that, like it or not, it is the LEGAL to breastfeed in public and they did what was the LEGAL thing to do, whether they liked it or not has nothing to do with it (or, with getting a tip). GET OVER IT, Mr. O.
I just wrote to the S-R to let them know what I think of this garbage. Won't you take a couple of minutes, as well??

| Nursing mother's unabashed exhibition not on the menu D.f. Oliveria spokesmanreview.com/blogs/hbo August 6, 2007 Sightem (at a Coeur d'Alene restaurant) – two breasts, in view of God and everyone. Seems a nursing mid-twentysomething gave neighboring tables an eyeful about 5 p.m. last Monday when she lifted her shirt to breast-feed her baby. (Aside: Now, before you deputize a posse to run me out of town for insensitivity toward nursing mothers, let me say this. I'm uncomfortable when women nurse in public places, even discreetly. But I'm trying to work through the problem. My problem.) We're not talking about a modest feeding here, however. A friend described the sight. At one point, she said, the mother had her girls exposed for about 30 seconds, without the youngster attached. Seems the waitress didn't know what to do. Nor the manager. So they did nothing. Which was the right approach. It saved a scene and preserved a good tip. Alas, no one warned a busser at the next table. Later, he was heard to complain, with a wide grin, that he was "scarred for life." Most of my Huckleberries blog gang thought the mother was an exhibitionist. Our Witch With A Gun from Moscow opined that "even the most militant breast feeders I know show more class than that." Cis, from Bonner County, categorized Little Ms. B Cupless with those teen Post Falls home-schoolers who march around with guns strapped to their backs. In dissent, however, mild-mannered Toadman from Spokane said: "I like boobs, even when they're utilitarian." Be careful out there. |
