BFing on TV tonight!

Not sure if it will be the same time in whatever time zone you live in. But here on the east coast tonight, Monday August 6th at 6:30pm on ABC World News they will be talking about breastfeeding and formula feeding.

That's all the info I know thus far.

Thanks! I'll be watching and hoping it is positive!

I saw the clip today watching GMA. It's about "banning formula", which I'm assuming is talking about the ban the bag campaign? I'm taping it.

That's in the middle of a family dinner event, so I'm going to miss it, dang it! And my brother still has my VCR. Maybe it will be online later? Let the rest of us know how it goes.

THEY GOT IT RIGHT! FINALLY! a news broadcast got it right! They talked about the benfits of breastfeeding, how some moms arent being told its better for their babies (interviewed one that was not told and said she would have BF if she had been talked to about it), they cited studies about the benefits of breastfeeding, they talked about studies showing that the bag reduces breastfeeding rates, and they noted that free formula will be given if a mom decides not to breastfeed, but there will be no free sample bag of formula to any mom (instead they showed the goodie bag they would be getting)

A spokes person for the National Organization of Women did a little blurb about how not a lot of work places are breastfeeding friendly for new moms.

Yay! It was great! I just wrote ABC news a little note thanking them for a wonderful piece. I also added that I hoped the women on The View saw it, too.
I'd say that was as balanced as possible. However the spokes woman is a MORON!!! What she should be doing instead of saying how its not possible to breastfeed for working moms, she should be up front saying the work places needs to also be breastfeeding friendly.

Other wise, I really liked it. They ended the report stating that women who want the free formula can get it if they so chose.

They also showed NIP!

I just saw it, I happened to have the TV on. It was the best piece I've seen on this issue so far. They really emphasized the benefits of breastfeeding and showed a few nursing babies!

I missed it!!!!!!

ETA: I just found it on abc.com. Here's the clip.

Just click on the "Breast Milk Battle" video.

I was so thrilled to finally see some reasonable coverage. Go ABC!

I loved it! YAY!!! I didn't have a problem with the woman talking about working moms. She seemed to be saying ok, this is a good step in the right direction, but there are other barriers that need to be broken down for moms to be able to be successful. Remember her statement was probably heavily edited and there was probably more to her point. On the whole, it was great! Stories like this are why I usually watch ABC over the other networks.

For those of you that missed it, not to worry! I have located a copy for you.

I, for one, liked it.

Was I the only one jealous of the bag they would get? That "i eat at moms" t-shirt??? omg. i wish i had gotten one LOL

I was so excited when I saw this last night! I was practically jumping up and down! They got it right! Yay!

This almost makes up for The View. And it makes the Today show look really, really stupid.

I agree! Great great coverage - and they got the issue right, which was very refreshing. I appreciated how the segment was unapologetic that "breastfeeding is best."

I didn't find the NOW spokeswoman's comments offensive: frankly, they are correct. Many workplaces do not have adequate accommodations for pumping moms; many workplaces are not committed to letting working moms pump as often as necessary. I saw her comments as saying "this is a good start, but we need to support continued breastfeeding as well."

I thought the piece was good overall, but wish they would have expanded on the AAP recommendations or put the WHO code in there, instead of only mentioning up to 6 months. Although they did say "exclusively" up to 6 months, some who aren't educated about breastfeeding or who weren't listening very closely to exact wording, will come away with the impression that it is only recommended for a TOTAL of 6 months. Other than that, it was good!

They said the AAP recommendation was one year! I was psyched to see that as a bullet point on the screen, not just stated in the report.
