Anyone using disposable dipes at the beginning?

I feel so guilty, but I can't see me wanting to change 14 diapers a day and wanting to wash them. I was going to wait till the baby tapers off to like 9 diapers a day... I am thinking of G-Diapers at first but I am not sure if my septic can handle it. I just don't like the thought of putting disposables on the baby... is anyone else struggling with this?

Also, I have about 4 dozen prefolds (just the standard size) and a bunch of AIO's but no newborn prefolds. Could I use regular prefolds and just fold them more if I do decide to use them from the beginning? I am a diaper dummy.

Thanks!

absolutely. I will be using both in the newborn days

I have 6 kids. I will have no help at home. Combined with feeding baby, feeding myself and just trying to get some sleep--yup! I am going to use some sposies when needed!

We did not use cloth with dd1 and then waited about 8 weeks before we started using them with dd2. This was mainly because we were still saving to buy the cloth package that I wanted...

This time, I'm not sure yet... I love the thought of putting a nice, soft cloth dipe on my new baby's bottom...

I think I will probably buy a couple of packages of Seventh Generation newborn disposables, just to keep on hand. Can't hurt...

Those first few weeks are soooo overwhelming...:

I might part time. We'll see. I bought some newborn fitteds, but not NEARLY enough to do exclusively. I also got some infant prefolds. We'll see how good I am at those with breastfed-poop-blowouts. If I have another c-section this time, I can see that I might not feel up to all that laundry, especially if DD has not potty-learned yet (she shows no interest) and I am already doing her diaper laundry.

I dedicated most of my CD money to building stash in sizes small and medium, figuring I'll be more with the program by then.

Since we had been ttc for just about 2 years, I've had plenty of time to slowly piece together my diaper stash and fill in where needed from what I had from ds (nothing fancy here.... just Fuzzi Bunz in XSmall through Large and a dozen size 0 kissaluvs w/some covers)

I plan on using the sposies in the hospital, but once we're ready to peel outta there? I'm taking him home in cloth and will continue to use cloth once we get home. I'll have sposies on hand for when we travel b/c the last thing I feel like doing when I'm on vacation is stopping to wash diapers!

My dh secured his "cloth diaper use and care certification" while ds was in diapers So at least this time I won't be deathly afraid of him ruining hundreds of dollars worth of diapers! He knows the rules, so I'm more than happy to hand that duty over to him while he's off for the two weeks of paternity leave!

This is our first, so I don't know yet what will work best for us. I'm planning on having some disposables, some kissaluvs size 0, and some Bumgenius around when she gets here, with the idea that we will eventually be 99% cloth but may have some times when it's not practical, especially at the beginning.

I was initially psyched about G-diapers but after reading about a hundred reviews about how difficult they are to use and how prone to clogging plumbing, I was scared off. However, if cloth doesn't work for you for some reason, throwing away just the G-dipes biodegradable insert in the trash is definitely better than landfilling a whole sposie. (There's still the extra step of removing the insert, which if you're going for total convenience is not ideal.)

We started out gung-ho on cloth with Dylan, but he got really rashy and we didn't have the know-how or equipment to trouble shoot, and wound up moving to disposables.

I'm more invested (in terms of money and enthusiasm) this time around and have the beginnings of the stash that I built for Dylan (which would have been woefully inadequate had we continued) plus some more that I am amassing.

We are still waiting to see if this will be a VBAC or another C-section because of the previa, so I have it in the back of my mind that there is a chance that baby will be 2-3 weeks early. If he's too tiny for the stuff we have, then we'll start in disposables. And realistically, when we are on trips or in places where cloth would be really inconvenient, we'll make use of disposables.

If I were a better person, I would switch Dylan over to cloth now... or just get on the stick and toilet train the poor kid. :

I have no idea how to use cloth diapers, so I will be using disposables some. I have cloth diapers and intend to use them, but I am allowing myself to have a trial and error period.

Since this will be my first time around, I'm going to play it by ear. I will have prefolds, g-diapers, and a nice fitted cloth diaper or two (with washable inserts), as well as 7th generation and tushies disposables, and see what works best for me. I'd love to try and use cloth as much as possible, but I'm not going to beat myself up for using disposable when I need a laundry/sanity break.

No. I was always worried about chemicals on a new bum. I only only needed a few. I didn't even need 'the best' -- just maybe a dozen preolds and some pins. Such a total no biggie. (How did our ancestors ever manage without the lastest/greatest fitted or baby wrap?!? lol) . While I do understand convience and dryness, I cant see chemicals on newborn baby.

We we most definitely be using disposables for the first month. I'm not changing 28 diapers a day!

This is my 3rd baby, and I will have 2 in diapers. They will both be in Sposies.:

Changing lots is a given : . Babies need frequent changing as much as rthey need nursing. If you are not doing EC, you need to change a baby many times in a day, even if you don't feel like it. TIny babies aren't hard to change. Toddlers are hard to change. Newborns just lie there, and the diapers don't even stink. I find it sad to think of people trying to figure out how not to change thier babies as much as a baby needs changing. Reject chemicals on the tender skin of newborn. :

I don't blame you one bit for that! That's a LOT of poo! What is your stash looking like for twins? Just curious...

To answer the OP's question, No (for the most part). I'll probably use sposies at night until the baby stops pooping at night. That's just easier for me.

We used sposies with ds until the meconium was done and then moved to cloth. This time we'll be doing cloth from the get-go. I plan on having Dh do most of the diaper laundry for the first month or so. This means, however, that I will be posting a sign with explicit directions for our landry room so that there's no confusion about what needs to be done and in what order.

I think you'll be fine if you want to use regular PF's. IMO, the regular size PF is do-able but it will be bulky. If you will be using cloth before the baby is about 6 months or so though, you might want to get some infant sized ones. My ds was 10 lbs at birth and could still fit an infant PF until about 6 months.

ETA: if you use the reg. size PFs in a wrap-style cover you might need a bigger size cover to fit over the dipe.

we are a disp dipe family :

I used cloth with DS 1 (back in a day of only prefolds and pins and plastic pants!! I had ONE velcro cover but they were SOOO $$ then and hard to find ) we did fine but switched to disp when I went back to work.. daycare does NOT take cloth in my experience..

this babe will be in some form of childcare from (if I'm lucky) 4 wks old (if unlucky at 2 wks old..) I am NOT happy about this but self employment has it's drawbacks.. luckily it is *only* 3 days a week.and( if babe is not a screamer) I can bring him/her to ofc for morning shift). sigh

sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do...

I'm planning on using cloth from the start. We started DD in sposies when others talked us out of using cloth, but I find, for us, cloth has been the easier option. I can run a load of laundry at midnight in my bathrobe. I can't run to the store and pick up a pack of sposies.

ETA: I work from home, and my DH and I share a car (which means most days I'm without one). Another reason why cloth is more convenient for us.
Hopefully not because I only have newborn cloth diapers so far... but if I have to go back to work, sadly I will be using sposies.

I am playing it by ear. I will be all alone with newborn and my two kids. With my son when I am not up to cloth, we use sposies. Same will go with this baby I am thinking. Some days I need to just rest. Other days I am super mama and love the care cloth takes.

Just remember, every cloth change is one less diaper in a landfill. Every single one helps! And every one is more then some others bother with. Your trying, who can ask more? Like everything, it is what works for you.

For most of this pregnant I have been blue about the baby but so excited about the cloth baby diapers! LOL I have a feeling they will get used a lot around here. But who knows? Hubby will be home anyware from 1 month to 4 months after baby is here if they do not get extended and then I know we will be doing cloth 100% again as he is soooo much help and great with diapers!

You just be happy knowing your a great mom ok!

I got motherease one-size diapers for our first DC. They are supposed to fit 8 - 35 pounds. Elena was 7 lbs 7 oz at birth so I figured they'd be fine on her ---- NOT!

We were in disposable for about the first 2 months, until she was 9 pounds (and a skinny 9 pounds, at that!) I agree with all the posts about the lack of time... quite frankly, I think my time was better spent cuddling with baby and/or DH rather than washing out diapers for those first several weeks. It was just a battle (save the environment) that I chose not to fight for those first 2 months. I'll likely be using disposables again, at least for a month, with DC#2.
