Someone on facebook had this story on their page. It's VERY disturbing

I saw her story on hegab-rehab, of all places. It is heartbreaking. I haven't seen anything about it in US news sources though. It is not a very nice time for Muslims in the world it seems.

Yeah ... I brought up the comparison because to me it's not really so different though. The outcome obviously is, but the difference between successfully attacking a woman and unsuccessfully attacking a woman is just one of intervention, not of intention.

Like I said to the person who brought the Seattle story to my attention, let's just hope Seattle courthouse security is considerably more on the ball.

Assalamalaikum Everyone:

Been lurking mostly for a while..coming out to ask a question. Does anyone know about a place for learning swimming-Women Only place in NYC? I've been obssessed (sp?) with the idea of learning swimming lately..I would love to learn this finally kind of getting over the fear as I drowned once when I was around 5 yrs old...but I can't seem to find a place where it's only for women...in case anyone knows..pls help!

Thanks. Hope all is well with everyone!

Assalamu Alaikum Noorjehan:

When I was living in Brooklyn, my upstairs' neighbors took swim lessons at the Jewish Community Center in Brooklyn...although they were not Jewish. With the big orthodox community there, I would guess it would be a good place to find sex-segregated classes.

I also remember reading an article about Muslim women at Rutgers (I think) getting some women's only swimming time...but I don't think it involved lessons.

You could also call the Muslim Youth Center in Bensonhurst and see if they know of classes.

Peace.

some swimming centers offer private lessons. call somewhere, like ymca, and see if they offer private lessons. NY has a lot of muslims, if you ask around, you might find a place offering sisters-only swimming sessions. if they don't have something going on, call up a pool, ask them how much to rent it out, if only female staff can be allowed in, if windows can be blocked, and what the clothing requirements are(ie can you wear shorts?). then, tell sisters about it(and i'm sure they'll love to go swimming) and ask if any of them can teach you how to swim. and, if they don't know how to swim, theres always the shallow end(still tons of fun) and you can hang on to the edge of the pool. or ask the pool people if they will offer private group lessons!

good luck! i was going through this 2 months ago, at 10mths pregnant, desperate to go swimming, the pool people never got back to me, and after i delivered, someone found a pool they go on a regular basis, and i can't wait to go swimming next week!

Wa 'alaikom as-salam~

The JCC Manhattan site says they do private swimming lessons, and women-only water aerobics. The Metropolitan Pool and Fitness Center in Brooklyn says nothing about lessons, but they do have regular women-only swimming hours. And if you have some time and money to kill, the Fit Muslimah Summit up in Connecticut about a week from now might still have some spaces.

Wa'alaikum Assalam:

I subscribed about 7 or years ago. I loved it when I received the magazine, but it was always frustrating that there were only four issues per year...and they were usually late in coming. Still, I loved it...and loved that I was supporting it. No idea if they do more issues these days and are more on time. They were relatively new back then I believe.

Assalamu Alaikum:

I posted this in the Ramadan thread, but thought I'd post it here too.

There's a free get ready/psyched for Ramadan seminar being held online on August 17th. You can read more here:
http://www.almaghrib.org/ilminar/

It looks very good...and the Shaykh giving it has a good reputation and is a native English speaker (Canadian).

Peace.

Salaam,

Thank you all for the replies regarding my inquiry! I also found out colleges here teach swimming for absolute beginners as well, though most likely those are not only for women. I have looked at some of the places you have suggested here, looks like this year it's a bit late for the lessons..most of those already started in June.. Definitely inshaAllah looking forward to next year!

Salaam alaikum

Sure! In need of some community here....

I've been Muslim will be 8 years in September inshaAllah (doesn't seem possible!) Married for what will be 6 years in January. (That is a question/assumption I get ALL THE TIME, people think I converted because of him. Nope. I was Muslim 2 years before I met him! I also was not a "9/11 convert"--it just happened to be after 9/11 that I physically got to a location to formally take shahada--I broke my ankle, I rarely left my house for six weeks!)

Anyway, 8 years it will be soon! And my first Ramadan in a while to fast, I figure my nursling currently is old enough I'm not *too* worried about it affecting supply or anything. SHould be interesting, me getting up super-early to eat and all....

let's see the last Ramadan I was not majorly pregnant or nursing and worried about it was 2005.

I'll be on here a lot seeing how everyone's Ramadan is going......off to check the Ramadan thread!

salaam alaikum

Walaikum AsSalaam Peaceful_Mama. Hope that your Ramadan goes well. I won't be fasting this Ramadan because of my nursling.
