Msidiqi-
I circ. as well, DH could never think of not.
I have been recently thinking about it a lot, and the question keeps popping in my head, why are we cutting off a piece of our body that was created by god?
I understand my DH argument of it as cleanliness, etc....but....my mind has been very heavy with this. Enough to the point of me thinking of hoping for a girl next, inchallah.
Has anyone else dealt with this?

as salaam alaikum sisters!

thanks mame fati for checking on me i have been having some serious pre-labor and am still working so that's why i've been MIA. the baby is due in january, insha'allah, but i think she wants to make an early appearance.

i know my husband has lots of daleel on circumcision but i do know that for one thing, an uncircumcised male is not allowed to be an imam. there was a brother in my husband's village who converted to islam and had to get a circ as an adult in order to lead his family in prayer. please don't quote me on the daleel, i have to get the sources from hubby.

My son is circ'd and I regret it. I am pregnant again and am hoping it's a girl and I don't have to deal with the issue. I won't circ if the baby is a boy, so "by dealing with the issue" I mean my family being upset and also explaining to the two sons why they are different. I did some research (don't have time to post it all here, will try later) and reached the conclusion I don't have to circ.

arizona umi- I missed your presence!!!!
Praying that your little one stays in a little bit longer! I was a month early, supposed to be january, born in december. Inchallah, all will work out how it is supposed to be. Are you still dancing?
I do know that an adult who conforms and is not circumcised, has to be in order to be an iman, lead prayer, and from what I have heard enter paradise.
I am interested in the roots and history of circumcision within Islam.
And, with female circumcision seeming to be more of a cultural, than religious deal, it makes me wonder about the place of circumcision within Islam. Because, we are all saying "female genital mutilation is unislamic", but what about males?
I would love everyones thoughts and knowledge on this.
Sending love to all of you.
Mame Fatima

Asalamu Alaikum Ladies -

Mama Fatima - I don't know much about circ - only that I have heard it is required. So after I read your post the other day, I pulled up some fatwa on the internet. After reading it kinda seems that it is required. From what I read, some scholars even say that it is mandatory. I don't mean to start a debate here, I am only speaking from my heart, but if I had a son, I would definitely circ. I guess I don't see it as genital mutilation especially we know that the Prophet (pbuh) talks about it from many authentic hadiths. As with everything in Islam, we have a choice. May Allah guide us in all the choices that we make for His sake.

I am not sure how well this fits into Islamic tradition, because to be entirely honest, I do not remember the story in the Quran as well as I remember the story from the Old Testament, but I will circ my sons in keeping with the covenant of Abraham, because I feel that all of the Abrahamic religions stemmed from those roots and I have yet to find anything that is "the word of God" that tells people to stop circumcising their sons. The Christians made circing unneccesary in the New Testament, but that was a decision made by men and not God, so I don't find it valid.

Wow Well said Jennifer.

In saying this, I want to say to all those listening and lurking that I respect the decisions that every mother makes for their family and I hope that they would respect mine. I believe as Muslims, we should follow what Allah has perscribed for us and truly believe this is one of them.

The video would not work for me. Maybe it is just my computer but it would only play for 2 seconds and then stop. I would love to watch it.

Mama Aminah, does You-Tube work for you, generally? What kind of connection do you have to the Internet? Are you using Windows or Firefox? It might be that the connection is timing out before you load the whole video.

Here is the link to the store where the CD/Book A is for Allah is sold. I didn't see another link to view the video but I know they have free downloads of music there -- there was a song by Yusuf for Ramadan.

Assalaamu alaykum sister,

I'm wondering where you read this - I have some conservative books and none of them say any of that as far as I know. Sorry if that sounds crabby, I'm truly interested as everything I've read says circumcision is a strong sunnah but not fard and that new male converts do not need to be circumcised unless they choose to be. Jazakullah khair!

Hope all is well with everyone! I do have a question for you all - anyone know of an online source to buy cute little girls' abayas? My daughter wants to dress like me (at least at home) and we got her a cute abaya but she's shredded it already. I'd love ones that are more durable!

Salams

I don't know your daughter's size but I know that desertstore.com sells little girl abayas. My dd is 2.5yrs and I did the measurements, they would be too big for her. They are based out of Saudi Arabia so shipping may be a bit expensive. You may want to google it and look at some of the websites to see if they sell them in the U.S. - I hope that helps.

I am using DSL connection and You-Tube usually works for me. I have never had a problem. I use Windows. I will try it again later and see if it works for me. Thanks! I have heard some of Yusuf's work and I really like it.

I went to Wal-Mart today and I realized why this part of the year is hard for me. I am a revert to Islam. I grew up Catholic and my entire family continues to "practice" Catholocism. So, they celebrate Christmas. I grew up celebrating and, of course, loved the celebrations. I loved singing in the choir and decorating the tree and, of course, the presents.

Don't get me wrong, I love Islam and truly believe that Christmas is more of a commercail holiday than a religious one. So when I was at the store today, they were playing Christmas music. I found myself singing, "Hark the harold angels sing, Christ is born in Bethlehem." What is wrong with me? Why do I like these songs so much? Then I couldn't get them out of my head. Does any other fellow revert have this problem? Those songs are just so catchy.

Ammaarah-
I do not have a paper trail for that info, although I do know 2 people who have done this themselves and this is the norm where my husband is from usually for converts. I will have more time over the christmas break from working and school and I hope to really study up on this topic as much as I can. I appreciate everyones input, as always.

Loved the A is for Allah song, DS is a dancer and vibed out to that as well.

Mame Aminah- I wouldnt worry about the xmas songs, I think they are made to be catchy! My husband and I still acknowledge xmas out of respect for my family still practicing it. Just because I am muslim does not make me feel like I cant be present with their celebration. God is big, like a tree, with many branches. Although, i do feel that xmas has been sold out by the grubby consumering hands of america. i thank God anytime families are brought together here!

I likewise acknowledge Christmas out of respect for my family. We accept Christmas gifts from them and we give Eid gifts to them. It works out well and I believe it is dawah. I love giving my nieces and nephews Eid gifts and a card explaining Eid so that they understand us. It works for our family, Alhamdulilah.

Thanks Fatima! What I just read on Ask Imam is that it's considered an emphasized sunnah or wajib in the 4 Sunni schools. Not sure about Shia schools of thought. I know there are often a couple opinions (I first wrote onions ) within a given school so I'm sure that's the case here too.

Take care sisters!
