Well it looks like Eid for us is on the 19th . Subhanallah I'm so glad to see there isn't a huge debate about moonsighting on here, cuz most of the time when I bring a question like this up, it sparks up a heated debate. I really love the mercy of Allah in that He allowed so much leeway, and different opinions. It's beautiful to see the same mercy amongst the sisters on here

mumster,
Like Mama Aminah, I too am a convert and I agree with all she has said as well. I think to really understand the Quran you need to understand the history of Islam and life of Muhamed as well. There are some really good copies of the Quran out there with fantastic footnotes that will kind of help you understand the context of certain passages too. I really like this translation it gives you background information as you read though the text and was incredibly helpful when I first started learing about Islam.

What people often don't stop to realize when casually reading the Quran was that most it it was written during a time when there was a lot of battling going on. Often when there are passages suggesting someone kill another person, it is in reference to warfare and things of that nature, not just telling the believers to go out and kill non-Muslims. In fact the Quran tells us that if we kill one innocent person in a land, it wold be like killing all of the people, but if you save one person, it is like saving all the people. (Sorry paraphrasing, but there is a nursling in my lap and I can't look it up)

Everyone I know here I think will celebrate Eid on thursday...but I didn't take off that day. I am taking off on friday just to make a 3 day weekend.. My sis is not happy with me at all about this...but I have to go somewhere on friday and thus the convinient Eid celebration..!!

What's Kaaba brownies? is that in sqaure shape...??? how do you make that?? :

As soon as I get my green card : (very soon hopefully)...I've decided at least one of the Eids we will be celebrating back home!! And then again, I already can feel the fighting that's gonna happen between me and dh about where to spend most of the time on Eid ..at his parents house or mine... and definitely I will be the winner and we will be with my parents ..tee hee...

Thanks for the responses - I really appreciate them. The issue does seem more complicated them just reading individual verses and calling it a day. It sounds like it takes study to really get it- someday if I have time I will have to look into it a bit deeper. Thanks again!

Wa alaikum asalam!

I was wonderring what happened to this thread! We haven't been doing anything special lately around here. We are having guests on the 3rd and trying to get the house spotless before they come. (Which doesn't work well with dh and 4 kids running around! )

About the abaya, I have been eyeing this one. I am not sure if you have seen it, but I like it a lot because it is so very simple.

WOOOOT! I found a muslim tribe Masha Allah!

Asallamu Aleikum Sisters. I'm a longtime lurker I'm a very lonely muslim woman because all the local muslims in my area are very mainstream, i really cant get along with them as much as I would like to anyway. Is there any mommas here from Houston?!?! (please say yes!) Ok, sorry Im all over the place, Im just happy to find a bunch of crunchy muslim ladies

Asalam Alaikum!

I was hoping I could come here and vent about my family for a sec. We are supposed to go to my mom's house today for a "gator party" for the game today. So, I called my mom to see if she was serving lunch and she was like, yeah, ham sandwiches! I told her it was against my religion and she got all huffy. So, I was like, well I guess I just eat before I come, and then she's like well you could eat some black eyed peas, but of course, she cooks those with pork as well! I don't expect her to change her entire menu because of me, but if you are going to invite my family, then at least have some respect for my views. They havent changed! Ugh!

Sorry mama! My mom is like this too. Or she'll tell me, "just give it to him, what he doenst know wont hurt him" (referring to DH) she really doenst get the picture that *I* dont eat pork any longer either! She brings me tamales, which are made with pork lard, and other mexican dishes that she makes with my grandma, I just have to toss it, and it stinks because, had she used vegetable fat or something they would be edible

Asalamu Alaikum Ladies!

I have been away for a few weeks but, Alhamdulilah, am back home now.

Jennifer - so sorry about your family! That just doesn't make sense. Why invite someone and then not provide anything they can eat. Families are so annoying sometimes.

Alhamdulilah I have been blessed with a very understanding Mom. She always prepares something that we can eat. The rest of my family however, is a different story. Why must there be alcohol at every family function???? Can they not drink for one day - so annoying!

Big FYI
I found a excellent PLAIN black abayah thats really good quality and in the states
http://www.al-ikhlas.com/items/abaya...103-detail.htm
Oh and taaa-daaa! On sale!
*bingo!*

Im SO excited, I have a ton of overgarments but really need a plain, everyday black one...and while alhannah.com has great stuff their quality is (in my opinion) and I dont have the patience to wait for an overseas package.
LOL
dont get me started on ordering Islamic gear from abroad (unless its alhediya which is imho)

Cant wait! Ive got quite the new wardrobe goin' on and will be shoppin' up a storm when we go see our families in Iran this summer...

I *am* sooo tempted by the turquoise one too! Hmmmm....

Hmmm - I have only ordered form alhannah.com once but it is my favorite abaya and the best quality of all that I own. I got a couple others from alhediya which I also like and wear all the time but they are a little thinner. I ordered from the desertstore.com and that was not a good experience. I ordered a couple of abayas that were way bigger (according to the size chart) than I needed but they still don't fit. Then how do you send them back? Is it really worth the cost to return them? From now on, I will only order from alhediya when ordering from an overseas vendor. At least that way, I know the item will fit.

I really would love a couple more new garments since mine are all getting old but I am going to wait a little while. Hopefully I will loose some weight and the ones that I ordered from the desertstore will fit me.

Salam sisters,

I was hoping I could ask you ladies to keep my family in your prayers. We had a level 2 us today to check for abnormalities, and they found choriod plexus cysts on her brain. (Its a girl, btw) This is a marker for trisonomy 18. They didn't find any other markers, so I am trying to have faith that this will go away on its own, but since one of my dds already has a rare genetic abnormality, I am having a hard time not worrying. I know whatever happens is part of Allah's plan, but I am beginning to wonder, how much one person can take. Anyway, please pray that everything works out for the best.

So sorry Jennifer! May Allah give you the strength to handle whatever He has in store for you.

Please keep us posted!

salaams to all my muslim sisters! Am so happy to find this tribe.. Thread.. Let me introduce myself. I'm a muslim mama to one son.. Named deen. He'll be one years old on 24january! I was born a muslim who grew up in the US Altho now i live in south africa, married a muslim man from here.. Even though i was born a muslim it wasn't as easy to get islamic education in america where i lived so i still have loads to learn. My husband went to madressah for most of his school life so he knows a lot about islam. It is so uplifting to see how strong you converts are with islam. I don't wear a hijab(inshallah i hope to get there one day soon) and it pains me to say this but as of right now i do not read all five daily prayers.. But i am going to put my mind to it to start! The hadiths that were posted in this thread are very up lifting i thank you for posting them! I know that being born muslim i SHOULD have it all together by now but truly faith is somethin that is gradual.. And islam is in my heart and inshallah may allah guide me on the right path. My family all read five time prayers altho not all wear hijaab. I will keep checking on this thread for spiritual motivation and i want to start reading some of the hadiths when i get back from holidaying in egypt. I am breast feeding my son and inshallah want to do so till two years old. Someone mentioned a book by mariama ba, i'd LOVE to read it if u still have it!
