Like Mama Aminah, I too am a convert and I agree with all she has said as well. I think to really understand the Quran you need to understand the history of Islam and life of Muhamed as well. There are some really good copies of the Quran out there with fantastic footnotes that will kind of help you understand the context of certain passages too. I really like

it gives you background information as you read though the text and was incredibly helpful when I first started learing about Islam.
What people often don't stop to realize when casually reading the Quran was that most it it was written during a time when there was a lot of battling going on. Often when there are passages suggesting someone kill another person, it is in reference to warfare and things of that nature, not just telling the believers to go out and kill non-Muslims. In fact the Quran tells us that if we kill one innocent person in a land, it wold be like killing all of the people, but if you save one person, it is like saving all the people. (Sorry paraphrasing, but there is a nursling in my lap and I can't look it up)
