What's a girl to do??:
Register for what *you* want! If someone doesn't buy it and you still want it, you can exchange other items for the thing you want anyway! You might want to ask whoever organizes the shower to include a note like "please include a gift reciept in case more than one guest brings the same gift" Then you could return it even if it's not on your registry and get store credit. You'll do fine if you have a convertible from the get-go and carry the baby while out and about. The baby will probably like it better anyway!

We did not have a bucket seat for ds, just a convertible and we will be buying a bucket seat this time.

I can't tell you how many times he would be sleeping great and then wake up (for good) when I had to take him out.

Britax seats rarely fit normal size babies (8# and under). So unless you're planning a huge baby, baby is better off in an infant seat or a convertible that fits him.

This is something we're debating as well. My none of my boys have ever stayed asleep for getting the buckets in and out of the car, so really that doesn't help us. My real concern was grocery shopping. I was only ever able to do that with the bucket last time around, my last lil guy didn't like it much, but would last for a quick trip of shopping. I was kind of assuming this one in a sling, plus my 2 and 3 year olds to chase would just be to much. But I'm thinking that either way, dh will be staying home with a couple kids for my shopping at first, so the sling should be fine for that. We have a friend who has offered us their bucket for free, though I'm pretty sure it's to old to use. But we were thinking of taking it just to use with the stroller (just toss it in the van when we think we might need it, not for baby to ride in in the car)

We're trying to decide fast, my in laws are here right now visiting, and mom in law is taking me baby shopping today. So we were going back and forth last night, in case she decides to get a car seat. Figured out we'd rather her get the Britax. If we decide we're not comfortable after all, we can just get the bucket, but would really rather not buy a bucket just to buy this in a couple months.

You know, one option is to get the nice Britax convertible right now. Then if you discover that baby is too small for it, you can send your dh to the store to buy one before you leave the hospital/birth center/home. That's what my friends did. But their little guy fit into the Decathalon wonderfully, so they didn't have to buy one. It's not really something that HAS to be decided before baby comes, kwim.

I struggled with whether or not to get an infant seat again too or not, but in the end I did. I got a clearance Combi Centre shipped to Alaska for under $90, so that's why I ended up getting a bucket. I wouldn't spend over $100 on a bucket though. I know Britax has the reputation as being the best car seats and both of my older kids ride in them now (DD in the Boulevard and DS in the Regent) but the more research I did on car seats the more I realized there are other great seats available. Especially in the infant seat market and some cost a lot less.

I think that the cold weather was the deciding factor for me. I do wear my babies, so really wearing the new one will leave me more hands free to take care of my other two than carrying the infant bucket, but since we're having winter babies, putting them into nice warm seats inside makes sense to me.

But as a car seat tech, I have to say that bundling a baby too much in a car seat or using anything that goes behind the baby or the straps are not recommended. As a matter of fact most instruction manuals specifically say not to use after market products. I use light fleece snowsuits then tuck blankets around the baby after it's strapped in snuggly then through a blanket over the whole seat. Then I can remove blankets as needed in the car. Or you can use a shower cap type of infant seat cover. In my classes to become a certified car seat tech (child passenger safety tech-actually) I found out that there are no Federal regulations on after market products (head supports, toys that attach to the seats, Bundle Me's, etc) so even if the package says that it's crash tested they really don't have any standard to compare it too. Only actual car seats and vehicles have Federal regulations. Ok, I'm rambling! Sorry, I've made so many car seat mistakes with my kids, that I kind of got sucked into doing tons of research and then became a tech so I can volunteer at car seat checks. It's something I'm very passionate about.

lisalulu-check your manual, I'm pretty sure that your snugride lets you leave the handle up in the car. Most recent snugrides allow you to leave the handle in positions A D or E in the car (all the way up or down). My new infant seat says you have to leave the handle up in the car!

So Gina, if your still reading all this! I would look at other options if you decide to get an infant seat and save yourself the extra $100 over the Britax seat. Maybe look at one of the Graco Safeseats or new Chicco Keyfits that go to up to 30 pounds, so you get more use out of the infant seat if you have bigger babies.

And please, everyone have your seats checks by a car seat tech! It really is true that almost all seats we seat at checks are installed incorrectly. A very common mistake is using latch in the center when it's not allowed. Most passenger cars have latch only on the two outboard seats, but parents "borrow" one anchor from each outside seat to use latch in the center.

I hope this helps and isn't more confusing!

I was thinking about that. Hubby insists on getting the bucket, but if I get the other seat first somehow (he's my cash cow right now ) then if we're in need of a bucket he can go to the store or borrow from our friend whose is only a year old.

Here's a question I just thought of because of this new car. Is it safer when you have three kids in the back to put the baby in the middle or does the carseat protect enough that they can go on the side and my youngest should be in the middle in his booster?

If you have a lap/shoulder belt in the middle then I would put the booster seat there and the infant seat outboard since the rule of thumb is the least protected child in the middle and rear facing seats are much safer than boosters. But this is one thing that is not black and white, if you have a high back booster with side impact protection for your child in a booster then maybe one of the older kids without any booster should go in the middle?

Situations about how to fit everyone in the car is part of the car seat training and there isn't always one right answer. The thing the instructors most stressed was no one ride with a lap only belt and no rear facing children in front of an airbag.

So, if you have a lap only belt in the middle, you aren't suppose to put an infant or convertible carseat there? I doubt I can fit all 3 in the back of my Camry anyway, but if I did, I would probably put the baby in the middle in a convertible carseat rearfacing. Is that unsafe?

Another question: Where do we find carseat checks? I'm a terrible mommy and have never gone to one. :

No, you don't want to use a booster w/ a lap belt only, other seats are fine. www.seatcheck.org

Sorry, I wrote that in a confusing way-you want to put your car seats in the lap only position instead of a person without a seat. Lap only belts are very dangerous in a crash because they don't stop the top of a person, but are a great place to install car seats. What I was trying to say is if you have to use all the seating positions put the car seats in the lap only position and older passengers in the lap/shoulder positions. So a rear facing car seat installed in the center with a lap belt is great.

Look for an car seat check event here http://www.safekidsweb.org/events/events.asp

A good car seat tech will teach you how to install your seat yourself instead of install it for you (well unless your hugely pregnant like we are now!).

I don't want to take over Gina's thread, but I'd happily start another on general car seat info and common mistakes if you ladies are interested.

AK mom, there are no events in my state (on the website you listed). Would my local police department be qualified to check my seats, or do I need to find a car seat tech? I'm ashamed to admit that I have never had Emily's seat checked : Having to install the bucket seat for the baby would be a nice excuse to have both seats properly checked!

That's okay! It's about carseats and I can edit the post title.

P.S. In 12 years and many many car seats, I have never had them officially checked, despite being safety girl!

I would check out Jennifer's site or go here http://www.usa.safekids.org/tier2_rl.cfm?folder_id=182 and see if searching by state puts you in touch with someone local. I've heard of lots of bad installs done by police or fire stations, so finding an actual tech is important. My local coalition is awesome, and the fire station techs here are great. That's why I posted that a good tech will teach you how to install your seat properly. This will help you find someone current with their skills since it is a relative new thing to make the parents install their own seats.

That's what I thought. I don't think it will work anyway, but if I could get all 3 carseats in the back, I was going to put the baby in the middle, with my older two on the outsides. We have a Britax Parkway for dd1, a Britax Decathalon for the newest dd, and a Britax Marathon for dd2. They would go in that order.

ETA: no seat checks on that site anywhere near me, both are 5-6 hours away. But I met a carseat tech at a doula training back in February and I'm on a yahoo list with her. I'll post there and see if she knows of any checks in the next few months.
