Better Out Than In: a thread for those of us looking to get healthier - Page 2

I succeeded in coming out of my last pregnancy healthier than before and plan to do the same this time!

I'm keeping a daily food journal and trying hard to keep to my midwife's recommended diet.

Yesterday I failed, though, as the nausea is ramping up. I didn't feel like eating much (although I did have a good breakfast and lunch) and in the late afternoon I went to the bakery and ate two doughnuts. I had a very light dinner and didn't eat nearly enough protein.

I did, however, do a fast 1 mile walk.

My goal is to not eat any junk food (nutrient light food) unless I successfully eat my full day's ration of nutrient dense foods.

My main problem is eating all of the foods the midwife recommends - especially in the protein area. I hate eating meat, can't eat most dairy because of DD's allergy, and get filled up quickly on vegetable proteins.

I walked 25 mins today, and did my Kegels. I'm doing great today on eating: fruit, yogurt + All-Bran for breakfast, whole-grain bread+cheese+ham for lunch w/ a glass of milk, two Wasa crackers with cheese for snack. (It's just before dinnertime here.) Dinner will be steaks, pan-fried potatoes (uh, maybe not so healthy, but it *is* olive oil! ) and salad. I'll probably eat some more Wasa + cheese before bed.

The trick will be *not* to eat ice cream when the kids do for dessert!

I took the kids out of the house today and walked around old navy and target looking for maternity clothes. Either the selection was really picked over or they had the wrong sizes in what I wanted to get so I didn't even get anything.
It's so humid right now I can hardly stand it!
I'd like to go for a walk when dh gets home from work but we'll see if he's up for it.
Today I had a bowl of cantaloupe for breakfast and then a bowl of organic raisin bran with 1% org. milk in it a little later to fill me up. I drank a ton of water with ice and then had a kashi trail mix bar on the way to the stores. Lunch was a mixed baby greens salad with balsamic vinegarette dressing and grilled chicken. Felt good to eat but I still feel hungry after my post-lunch catnap. I'll probably have an orange as a snack and then maybe some triscuits with cheese. Have no idea what I'm making for dinner...

Today we ordered out for Indonesian . . . yum. Probably not terribly healthy, but I'm doing so well lately that it can't hurt *that* much .

It was standard Holland today weather-wise: cool and rainy. I didn't leave the house, so I did exercises instead of walking: arm weights and pelvic tilts (a kind of standing ab crunch, if that makes any sense).

I also spent quite a while down on my hands and knees mopping up water with old towels. The washing machine went kooky. We just bought a new one and it'll be delivered on Tuesday--not that we can wait that long to do laundry. Anyhoo, perhaps this also counts as exercise?

Kari, good for you! Wow. Do you know how you did it? Hmm, that sounds stranger than I mean it to--what I mean is, did you do specific things to make it happen, or did it just kind of sneak up on you?

I'm joining this thread! I really learned to eat well in my last pregnancy and ended up a few pounds lighter after delivery (I'm still overweight though). I already ate somewhat well last time, but learned to cut out the sugar and carby stuff. I did prenatal yoga up a few times a week until I was about 40 weeks, then I was too big to do it

I quit eating most grains before this pregnancy and I plan to try to limit them. I have celiac disease which presented itself after ds was born and I feel so much better without grains. I am really craving them right now but I'm trying to eat fruit, seeds, and just a few gluten free whole grains instead. My family doesn't eat dairy or soy either so we eat alot of organic produce and then meat/beans/seeds. I still feel like we get enough carbs in the form of fruit, veggies and seeds (sunflower, sesame, hemp, pumpkin, etc). The kids and DH are still eating some rice, corn, millet and quinoa.

I would really like to focus on prepping healthy foods ahead of time for our family so that when I'm starving or nauseous that my family doesn't eat bad stuff. I'm also hoping to either walk or do yoga on a daily basis this time.

I agree on that one!

Today was a huge struggle trying to get up and moving . I was at the office at 9:30 (a little late but patients cancelled due to the weather - flooding etc). Nauseated the whole time but by noon and after lunch I felt better. I had raisin bran w/ milk again for b'fast and a sausage pattie. No midmorning snack. Lunch was mixed greens salad with a cucumber salad and pesto stuffed gnochi (the pesto didn't agree with me so I didn't eat much). I had another salad as a snack then dh made breakfast for dinner (blueberry pancakes - whole grain- sausage, eggs and cantaloupe.

I'd like to eat more fruit before I go to bed. I walked about 5 blocks to and from the office, no maybe more like 6. was going to go again after dinner but it started storming again and I figured I had walked in the rain enough for one day.

Hello,

I'd like to join you all in getting in better shape while pregnant. I eat pretty healthy, making 95% of the food I eat and most all with organics, no GMOs, no dyes, etc. (Also I have to be gluten free) But i don't exercise much (ok almost never recently), and I'm about 10, maybe 15 pounds heavier than ideal weight for my body.

So my goals:

- Use my Nordic Track ski machine to exercise at least 5 days a week for at least 20 minutes (takes me a while to work up to more minutes)

- When these 100 degree days pass, I want to walk outside at least 20 - 30 minutes a day.

- Try to eat 80 -100 g of protein a day with veggies and avoid carbs after 7pm as instructed by my midwife

- Do the kegel exercises

- Gain no more than 20 pounds

Ok, with all that said, is it really possible to control the weight gain? My midwife said to watch it because I'm really small and my hubby is really tall, and she said I don't want to be homebirthing a 12 lb. baby my first time. Agreed. On the other hand, my sister has gained 70+ pounds with both her babies, and tells me you can't control the weight gain or the size of the baby. What's the truth from you experienced mamas???
