DS urged to switch to formula

Thread Starter
I've read on MDC of a lot of pregnant and nursing women being sent free literature and samples from formula companies, who got their name and address from a maternity shop or whatever.
Now my DS (age 22, single, childless) has started receiving this stuff. He's received magazines, coupons, and today a box of powdered formula, coupons, and "helpful" literature "for the breastfeeding mother."
What we're wondering is how the company got his name. Obviously, he's not going to a prenatal clinic or maternity clothing store. He did buy a cell phone recently, and it may be worth noting that his first name could be either a man's or a woman's. Are they buying mailing lists from phone companies?
I'm pleased to note that my DS was very displeased to see formula samples being sent to supposedly BF women. He's absorbed a lot of my ranting over the years, obviously.

My guess is, there's some woman out there who shares your DS's name, is pregnant, planning on breastfeeding, and NOT getting all of that oh-so-helpful "information" from the formula companies.

All in all, not such a bad thing.

Wow, that's scary. Perhaps just the possibility that he is a female (based on his name) in childbearing years is enough to send that garbage.

Mine started coming because I made the mistake of giving my name at Motherhood store when I bought some maternity clothes. I donate the formula samples and coupons to mothers I know that formula feed (as much as I'd prefer they were breastfeeding, there are LOTS of people out there that choose or are forced to formula feed for one reason or another).

My old neighbour across the hall once received a sample pack from Nestle...a single childless male in his early 20s...named Josh. The mail carrier brought it to me because Josh was not home at the time and I brought it over to him later and teased him ("Uh...Josh...you have some news for me?") but he had no clue as to why he was getting the sample. He didn't even know anyone who had kids/were expecting that might have used him to get extra freebies. It was really strange.

I just figured out how nestle got me this time...I think they are connected to/own Babycenter.com. It's the only thing I signed up for with my last pregnancy.

The saddest thing about this to me is that each one of those formula samples ebing sent out to single childless MALES is that each "free sample" is being added to the cost for women who have no other choice but to formula feed, and is making life even harder for them.

I'm all for banning the hospital formula bags. Let the formula makers advertise on TV and in magazines like everyone else, but quit sending out cases of your wares to women who already told you they plan to use their own FREE perfect baby food source.

Practical joke.

That's my guess.

That's really odd. I guarentee that won't be the only thing like that he gets. Those companies are relentless. I also agree with KittyKat. Those samples aren't "free", they're built into the cost of formula, so moms who do use formula have to pay for them for ppl who don't need or want them.

I somehow got put on a list to receive American baby a few years ago and it took me complaining to them for 3 years for them to stop sending me their mag. They give away their lists too, so I've gotten at least 10 cans of formula (I'm talking actual cans, enough for a few days worth of bottles) and many samples of sposies and coupons for formula and other nestle products. :

Gag me with a fork, there was an ad for baby formula coupons at the bottom of the screen on the page with this thread!

I'd tell him to send it all back at the formula company's expense.

I would wonder if it is due to the grocery club cards. If the OP's son used his grocery club card - or let another customer use his card - and purchased anything in the baby isle, it could explain how he ended up on the mailing list. Same for the poster whose neighbor recieved samples.

Email or PM the mods with the info and they will block them.

Contact the company or organization that sent them. They will tell you where they got his name.
