bird resources

Does anyone have any recommendations for resources to study north american birds? In particular, I'm looking for books that will go into detail for the anatomy, not just bird identification. Foot shape, beak shape, wing structure etc....We already have a few field guides, the fandex bird book and I've looked at some of the dover coloring books.

BTW my children are almost 8, 6, 5, and 2.

TIA,
Shawn

Shawn, you may want tolook at the Cornell Ornithology lab website. They have many special birdwatching programs, identification resources and additional links. We use many field guides, our own nature journals for drawing and nature books. We also do a lot of hiking and backyard birdwatching, feeding, gardening and habitat creation. It is a lot of fun and I hope you find some good resources.

There's also a fascinating book you might like for yourself - it comes with a CD of birdsong - you could pass on interesting things to the children:

The Singing Life of Birds: The Art and Science of Listening to Birds, by Donald Kroodsma - you can "search inside" it on the Amazon.com site and also read the 5 star reviews. - Lillian
