Looks like a homebirth may not be in the cards for this one... - Page 2

anudi1- it's funny, I actually did my back-up care with Margaret during my son's pregnancy. I would LOVE to go back to her (and Anne, they're both great) but North Fulton is about an hour and a half from my house. I remember at one point when I as in transition with my son that I thought "I want an epidural but I CAN NOT ride in a car!" It was one of those crazy transition thoughts but it does make me realize that unless I was in very early labor, I wouldn't be able to get in a car and I would rather labor at home as long as possible. I wish we still lived in Atlanta, we had so many more options there.

I could suggest what Margaret said...

I was really apprehensive about getting to the hospital too early. Margaret suggested renting a hotel room, go there as soon as labor begins, and work through labor comfortably there, then go in at the last minute. I really considered that as an option, but since I started labor in the middle of the night, I just didn't feel like going anywhere then. If $$ allows it, maybe this might be an option. I also had it planned that I would take my son with me to the hotel, but before I left for the hospital, I would call my parents to come meet at the hotel, to care for my son, until I was ready for them to come to the hospital. At the time, I wasn't comfortable leaving my son for any lengthy amount of time. Just a thought...

Thanks for the suggestion anudi01- I think I'm feeling good about the local hospital now, so luckily a long drive isn't something I will have to worry about.

UPDATE:

Well I have some good news, I had my appt with the hospital CNM. He was so laidback and had great energy about him. He actually does do waterbirth at the hospital (I'll have to bring the pool). We talked extensively about how being on your back is crazy and he was thrilled about how informed I was and that I know what I want. I had always thought that I would never want a male midwife, but I really liked him! He had his children at home and said that the head of the ER dept at the local hospital had all 4 of his kids at home and that one of the hospital pediatricians had his children at home too. I never knew we had so many crunchy medical professionals around here! I tried to really listen to my intuition and I feel good about planning to have a natural hospital birth now if I end up feeling like going (still hoping for a quick and easy UC though!)

Yay!! I'm sure this eases your mind a lot.

that is so cool!!! how exciting!

That's cool.
Did he talk at all about himself and WHY he decided to be a midwife? I always feel the urge, when I meet a gentleman midwife, to try and interrogate them and find out what makes them tick and why that career choice- but I've never had the nerve. :

i'm glad your appointment went so well! one thing i was wondering though:

if everyone from the local hospital...who presumably live close(r) by...is having their babies at home who attended their births? the mw from 2 hours away? did they UC? maybe there is are other hb mws nearby you don't know about?

anyway i'm glad it all seems to be working out!!

yep, I'm definately feeling much more calm (especially knowing our meager finances won't be taking a big bite).

flapjack, I am usually very suspicious of male midwives too, but I could just tell he was in it for the right reasons. I will definately ask him about how he came to the decision to become a midwife as we move along in our relationship. I hope to one day become a midwife too and I always love to hear how midwives realized and followed their calling.

I wondered that too- he said that since they are Drs (and he's a midwife) they all helped their wives deliver their babies. Sort of UC I guess...

i can't wait to hear how your pregnancy goes with him!!! very cool. i read an article (i think in mothering..who knows) about a french male midwife that was heavenly.

i think it's just as weird for OBs to be men.... i mean, seriously. what in the world makes them want to do pap smears all day long?

dang it! i always get off topic...

Do you mean a french male midwife? Or do you mean Michel Odent? When I finally stop gestating, I'm planning on doing my doula training with him.
